Question about Kenmore Freezers

I have an upright Kenmore freezer. The door was left ajar for a few hours this afternoon. When I came home it was beeping and the red light was flashing. We removed the impediment and closed the door completely. The beeping stopped but the red light is still flashing after appx. 2 hrs. How long will it take to stop flashing? Or does the flashing mean it is not cooling? Thanks

It means it is aprox 8 degrees below cut out temp keep it running it will catch up

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

There is no reset for the alarm. The alarm goes off when you are not maintaining temperature.

During the time the door was ajar, warm air got into the freezer either icing up and locking the cooling fan or forming a block of ice on the cooling coils (Restricting cooling air flow.)

The best thing you can do, unless you want a $300.00 plus service call to defrost everything, is to turn power off to the freezer. Open the freezer door. Have plenty of old towels to soak up the water in the bottom of the freezer as it defrost.

You did not provide a model number which is located on the inside wall of the freezer. Every 8-10 hours your freezer will completely shout down for 20-30 minutes where only the light works and the defrost heater turns on. The ice build up is too much for the defrost heater to handle.

In some freezers the defrost mode is in the control board, in others it is a separate component that you can repeat trip using a flat head screw drive.

Did the unit previously experience a power loss? If the temperature of food rises to an unsafe level, the red light will glow. First, deactivate the alarm to the unit by unplugging it or flipping the household circuit breaker. Wait approximately ten minutes and then turn on the unit. After deactivating the alarm and the unit has run approximately four hours, the red light/alarm should go off on its own. If the red light/alarm continues to stay on, the freezer may possibly have a communication problem with the control board, temperature control or a wiring harness. If this is the case, I would recommend connecting with an experienced technician to determine the underlying cause.

Most likely cause is a door being left ajar or gaskets not seating. If the ice looks like snow, that is your issue.

if the alarm is sounding its probably trelling you the freezer is at too high a temperature. plug it in and leave it plugged in, it can take several hours to re freeze

Flashing power light on Kenmore upright freezer


If the yellow light is flashing it may mean that the 9 volt battery is dead.

On my Kenmore there's a small battery compartment on the bottom right of the unit - under the door.
