Try cleaning the air filter, then a touch of starting fluid right into the carburator by taking the air filter off. If it then starts but wont run or stay running, the reservoir below the carb should be removed to clean at and the pinhole in the intake tube above the bowl nut. This is the most common problem with lawnmower start problems, the pinhole can be unplugged with one wire from a wire brush. Be careful with the gas, at least pinch off the gas hose with a vise grips while removing the carb bowl.. Never use a droplight around gasoline. most lawnmowers have no mixture adjustments, so it is a matter of cleaning the carb, tank, gas lines. Some oils in gas mix systems settle and clog after less than one season.

1963 vw newly rebuilt engine, starts then dies at RPM acceleration

Could be one or both of two things.

1. The accelerator pump in the carb is clogged, the linkage is unhooked, or the diaphram in the pump is bad. It's cheap to replace and comes in the carb rebuild kit. This usually just causes hesitation when you step on the gas pedal. It doesn't usually cause the engine to stop running.

2. More likely is that the main jet in the carb is clogged. At idle, high vacuum under the closed throttle plate in the carb causes fuel to flow thru the idle jet. As the throttle plate opens (as you step on the pedal), the vacuum under the plate dissipates, stopping the flow of fuel thru the idle jet, and the vacuum ABOVE the throttle plate increases, which is supposed to then draw fuel from the carb bowl thru the main jet in the carb. If the main jet is clogged with dirt, then it can idle just fine and die as soon as you step on the pedal.

Lawnmower will start, but dies. want to install new seat and needle.

Mower starts, then dies (user said)...classic symptons of a clogged main jet (the brass bolt for float bowl). In other words, fuel flow is NOT continuous through the carburetor.

My Toro revs up and down and is shutting down. New sparkplug, new air filter

Two things to check: 1) A restricted fuel filter would cause this problem. 2) Debris in the carburetor. My lawnmower would start, rev a little bit, then die. I could keep it going with the primer pump. The problem was the main jet in the carb was obstructed. The solution was easy since there was a plug on the bottom of the carb which provided access to the main jet. I removed the plug then removed the jet with a 6mm wrench. I cleaned it with carb cleaner and re-assembled. Ran great after that.

Good luck,
Techjoel

Sounds like a common fuel problem you need to remove carb & fuel tank and unless you can get a compressor they need a good blast out you may even take carb apart & check diaghram they have very small jets in fact most lawnmower shops have a sonic bath for this

you may just need to remove the nut that holds the float bowl, and inspect the nut itself, half way up the nut should be a little tiny hole in the side.
use a bread tie stripped of the plastic covering and unclog this little hole, then replace the nut , when that hole becomes plugged the main jet cannot get fuel for the venturi pipe, thus the mower will start and hit a couple times then die immediately, that may fix the problem
