Question about GE JVM1860 Microwave Oven

1 Answer

My GE builtin microwave oven makes a buzzing sound, even when you just turn the surface light on and when you try to program it and, of course, doesn't heat. The repairman says it needs a new control panel. We have found a PCB Assembly on line for a little over $200. Another supply house told us the GE number is WB27X1038. Do you know if this is a good number or if the PCB Assembly would solve our problem? Nobody has anything in stock and we don't want to order anything if it's not the right part. The microwave was built in 2001 so it's not that old. Should we consider just getting a new microwave?

Working inside a microwave is not something Average Joe should attempt. There are potentially LETHAL amounts of stored energy that needs to be properly discharged before repairs can begin.

The repairs in this case are more than 60% of a NEW one - so it is advisable to put the $$ toward a new unit with warranty. 2001 makes it 9 years old. Typically manufacturers don't support after 10 years.

Thanks!!

You can possibly have a bad diode and or magnetron. When working on microwaves you have to be very cautious of what you are touching there is a capacitor inside that stores a voltage and can cause physical harm if not discharged.

This sounds like the control board also called a smart board in some models has to be replaced.

My GE Space Saver Microwave that comes on but makes a buzz sound in operation and does not heat.

If it buzzes before you hit "Start", you may have a control circuit board problem or a door switch problem.

If it buzzes after you hit "Start", you would probably have a bad magnetron and/or high voltage rectifier diode.

We would need more details no the failure and of course the full model number to help you further.

Keypad number buttons not working on ge spacesaver microwave - auto program buttoms work?

Very angry. Fairly new, little-used Spacesaver Microwave [3][Clock][Surface Light] buttons now do not work. We never even press [3], just [1] and [2] to warm sandwiches.
Unplugged for an hour. Still not working. Everything else works. We never use anything else. Bad solder joint in circuit board or keypad?
Thank you.

Unit makes a loud buzzing sound whenever the unit has power.

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

This can often also affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on too.

Details of our service and critical safety information and disassembly information is at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number) for more information & help.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Kitchenaid builtin microwave buzzing

I would recommend changing the diodes as well. This will usually take care of the problem.

Buzzing when surface lights turned on

Right. It sounds like either a bad connection on the control panel, or maybe a low or intermittent supply at the outlet.

I would try plugging a lamp into the outlet and see if it works well. That gives you a good low-current test. For a good high-current test, try a toaster or hair dryer.

You might also check the fuse and holder. It's pretty common for these fuses to get loose on the end caps and sometimes the holders may be loose.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

It is turns out to be the controller, we repair these for customers nationwide with our guaranteed $39.95 service.

Please feel free to contact me directly if you need more help. And please mention your model number when you write.

We're happy to help you and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

1800 XL JVM1860BD - won't work

It sounds like your controller may be failing. Or it could be an electrical line problem. Any other electrical itmes giving you trouble? Has anyone measured the voltage level of your power line? It should be around 110-125 volts AC. If it's significantly lower or higher, you may have a bad connection in your breaker panel or in the wiring leading to the home.
