Question about Dell Inspiron 2200 Notebook

1 Answer

I have a Dell Insiron 2200 with 248mg Ram. I installed DDR 1GB PC-2700 DR-333 of RAM to speed the laptop up. Everything seems to work fine, except: when I watch a movie from a external harddrive, video and sound freeze, then video and sound continues 6 seconds later, thus I miss 6 seconds of the movie. This continues on and on during the movie. I get perhaps 10 min of movie, then freeze. This does not happen w/o the 1 gb Ram installed. I tried two different brands of 1 GB DDR RAM, and its the same. Any thoughts?

This could be the speed of the bus on the motherbaord or it also possible that the voltage of Ram is too high or too low.

If it's a bus speed problem, you have no choice to upgrade the memory, instead you have to stick with the old one or you can opt for 512 mb since your laptop has only one Dimm slot.

First reboot your system, go into Bios Settings and go to Advanced System or Advanced or something similar option and check the Voltage settings and change the Ram voltage. You'll see the available options which is variable for the installed motherboard with the Bios. Change the Ram voltage to one point higher and reboot the machine normally. Now try playing the Video. If this doesn't help, Again change the Ram voltage to one point lower and once again reboot the system normally to check the effect.

Also update the graphics drivers to the latest version and don't forget to update/install DirectX, DirectX Version 10 will do (click here to download DirectX 10). You can try uninstalling the Graphics drivers and reinstall it. I am not sure with this one, but sometimes this does the trick.

It's necessary to update the Codecs or install a codec pack like KLite Codec Packs (click here to download).

Don't forget to restart the computer everytime you make the changes.

This issue is not very common and there are limited fixes. The most common problems after Upgrading a Ram are "No video" or "No Power on", but in your case, it's different and I've only come across this twice.

This is all what you can do with this for now, and if it's not worthy trying, you better stick with the old ram or 512mb (I am not sure whether you have tried with 512mb or not.)

You can check out the details about your Laptop's memory here.. click here.

Good luck.

Hi,
I belive the problem is caused due to non compatible memory being installed . According the Dell documentation the memory specification is as under

333- and 400-MHz DDR SDRAM
1Gb Non-ECC on each slot.

Just check the speed of the memory you are trying to connect.

Unit came with 2 256 mem sticks--bought and installed 2 1GB sticks(pc3200,400mhz,84pin,low density,DDR--unit will not boot

The 2 1Gb RAM are either the wrong type or they are incompatible.
Try to use the same brand and speed as the 256 Mb RAM that was installed in your Dell.

New ram memory on dell dimension celeron trying to

You should check with the folks at Dell since whoever wrote their technical manuals for this machine can't do basic math. There are 2 memory slots and each can handle a maximum capacity of 512MB, yet they claim the maximum capacity for the machine is 2GB instead of 1GB. Using 512MB modules would probably work.

New ram not speedy

well, the lowest speed of those rams will be effective for all rams. If you install same sized ram on 1st and the 3rd port, it should be run on dual channel mode and will be fastest possible. please try this if you have 4 ports.

Is there any problem in using a 1GB DDR with 400MHz speed in Intel D845GVSR board?

Since Intel says that this board will support DDR with 200/266/333 MHz speeds only. There should not be problem with your board more so that it works fine.

Dell dimension 2400

The front side bus speed of the processor is the limiting factor of your RAM speed.
The Processor has a 400 Mhz FSB, hnece your RAM runs at 266.
For RAM to run at 333 (PC 2700), you'll need a 533 FSB Processor.
