It's age. It's an older drive. You can tell by the 8x4x32 speed.

Sony has manuals at http://sony.storagesupport.com/product/180#documents

My advice is buy a new one. Make sure you specify anEIDE interface and not SATA. They can be found online for as little as $18. Walmart has them too, but run almost double in cost.

OK

there is a little rubber band on two gears on this burner, you need to open the tray open then remove power from it so its open, Take the rubber band off using a tweezers, Now you can get another rubber band from another old drive or you can check online for them, its a little rubber black band that has worn our on you and this is what closes and opens the cd tray.

Let me know if you got questions

Cause: Worn out band on bottem of cd tray

pleas edo be considerate and leave a feedback and rating before you leave, thanks

I took out all discs. When I tell it to play a disc the table moves back and forth slowly about an inch. After a couple trys "Table Error" shows up. Both belts are old but on.

Tray will prolly need retimed after the belts slipped off the pulleys.
Procedure is with tray brackets removed lift tray in back then push open button to let the cam gear spin around to open position. Then let tray down and try to close it with button. Reinstall brackets and may take a few attempts to get that gear in the right position!

DVD Tray will not stay closed

There is a leaf switch inside the loading mechanism, which detects the tray to fully closed state. If this switch has damaged, this kind of fault will occur. To repair it, you have to open the set, and take the loading mechanism out, and disassemble it. If you wish to get some details, check the site linked here.Pull up older posts.

When the open/close button is push , the DVD tray open and it close immediately without pushing button. The tray won't stay in the open positions.

check the close circuit switch inside the system. its maybe stuck, try to wiggle it a bit and it might work again.
the switch is at the end of the tray when it is closed, its a small black push botton swith.
be careful not to fry it when installing a new part

Tray won't stay open

My unit closed immediately upon opening since like 1 day after the warranty ran out. It bothered me. I finally tore it apart and this fixed it.

Take the cover off. As you are facing the front of the player, the blue sensor switch that controls the tray will be on your left in the middle of the carousel. Push button to open tray and locate it as the tray opens. Grab the tray and also the carousel and hold them so you can see the little blue switch. Use a tiny screwdriver or toothpick or other slender device to "flick" the switch fully forward and backward several times. Let go of the tray and try the button. If it still closes immediately, repeat the flicking. Try it again.

I close the disk tray and immediately opens again and stays open

Hello,Do you have the original face place on? Some after markets will cause the open tray button to stick. Next check the button to see if it moves freely, when doing this, also try feeling the button if it bottoms out, check for any debris behind the button, If these don't change the situtation, then there is a sensor on the tray to tell if it's opened or closed, the sensor is either malfunctioning or something could be stuck to the bottom side of the tray from preventing the disk to load, The last thing would be to look into is there a forgien object stuck in your tray area like a piece of papper or plastic, I hope this will help resolve your problem, we look forward to hearing back from you and please have a nice day, Thanks

Tray opens / closes on its own and will not play

Your open/close button might be stuck, you can try and unplug it and spray it with silicone lubricant and push it over and over again for a couple of minutes and then turning it back on after about 30minutes so the lubricant dries down first.

If all else fails, have a local appliance technician take a look at it...
