The wand can leak if the rocker switch is not in the UP position.
In MIDDLE position it will try to deliver hot water.
In DOWN position it will try to deliver steam.
The thermoblock in this unit is actually a 3-way valve, of which two positions route water from the boiler directly to the wand. The 3rd position (UP) routes hot water (but not steam) from the boiler to the group head.
Try holding the switch in the UP position by hand when making coffee. If the machine still pushes water through the wand then you will have to replace the switch inside the machine that is activated by the rocker, or the valve it operates.
The POWER LIGHT for the 889 is RED and located on the LEFT of the center cowling
The BOILER LIGHT for the 889 is YELLOW and located on the RIGHT of the center cowling
If you turn on the power to the unit (the INNER SWITCH on the RIGHT
SIDE) the RED light should turn on, showing that the machine is powered. At that point the YELLOW light should also turn on for about 10 seconds, at which point it will turn OFF with an audible CLICK.
If the RED light does not turn on then you have a very dead machine.
If the RED light does turn on but the YELLOW light does not then you have a half dead machine.
Opening up and repairing the 889 is not for amateurs. High voltage, heat and pressure inside.
If you decide to bin the machine I would appreciate getting the drip tray from you as I have lost mine.
Most likely you have developed a leak where the pump joins with the boiler. If you put descale chemicals in the reservoir then they may have been baked into the boiler and the backpressure has either ruptured or unseated the tube that leads into the boiler.
I have the same problem and clean the filter using a small brass bristled brush (I think it is a suede brush). It is the only thing that seems to get in the holes.I can't get it completely clear but it does seem to do the job.I also thought of getting a gas mantle cleaning prong but haven't tried it yet.It seems to be a build up of coffee that causes the problem.Spares seem to be a problem because the machine is obsolete.I'm thinking of buying another machine off e-bay to use as spares.
