You can go to dell.com and enter your TAG number of the computer and download the dvd decoder software that was installed when it was built.

I have a Dell Inspiron E1405 laptop computer. I recently noticed that when I inserted a music CD into the drive, that it would not play or even recognize it in the My Computer window. I can still play DVDs...

The Cd player my be dirty, you can get disks you put in there to clean them. Also sometimes the players are just picky and don't like certain CD's..... I'll build brand new PC's that only read some CD right from the start.

Make sure your disks are clean to, with no fingerprints.

I have a dell inspiron 1525 which plays cds but not dvds. The driver says dvd on it so it SHOULD be dvd capable. What can I do to fix this?

Hi,

First of all check the dvds you're using if they have scratches to isolate if it's a disc issue or not. If done and still not working then you should reinstall the decoding software of your Dell laptop that may be Sonic or PowerDvd if you have the disc for it or you might need to down it from My Dell Downloads, smartsource.dell.com where you might need to register first if you're a new user. If your Dell is still under warranty you should contact tech support for assistance. Also, ask them to remove the lower filter in the registry which is complicated if you're Novice with computer troubleshooting. If drive would still fail reading dvds then they should replace the optical drive with a new one since this may already be a hardware defect. Thanks and have a nice day!

I can play DVDs but the CD part of my drive is missing. I have an Inspiron E1405

Generally, most software problems with optical drives can be resolved with this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
If all the options there have no effect then there may be an issue with the CD optics of the drive and it may need replacement.

The DVD player plays, but the sound is staticky. Speaker works fine when on internet, and Itunes. We only have the problem when watching DVD's. The drive sounds funny, but plays the video just fine.

1. Usually the DVD player can play for years then you will get one that will play 6 months.
2. some times this is due to dust or dirt in the mechanism.
3. A can of compressed air sprayed through the DVD drive will sometime clear this issue.
4. the static sounds also can come from a dirty DVD disk.
5.Wash the DVD disk with a mild hand soap with warm water not hot then dry with a cotton cloth or bath towel.
6. check the sound cable to the mother board it may be loose also , this can cause static sound.
7. This may take a long time but if you have done a "de-fragmentation" of the hard drive this could be an issue also.

Cd rom problem

Try to play different cds from your dvd rom drive.
If all of them does play then i suspected the cd that you had inserted to play is faulty.

If all of the cds doesn't work, re-install your dvd rom driver. If it doesn't still read any cds then your dvd rom drive is faulty.

Note: If machine is under warranty no need to pay for the repairs.

Will not play dvd

or search on google for windows media player classic - if thats not what you want you need to re install a dvd player such as power dvd or win dvd for the decoder or use the codec project pack or klite codec pack or ffdshow or something along the lines of that

DVD Codec

Windows media player will play very few DVD's on it's own. It needs to work in conjunction with a decoder. You can find a decoder, ie... Power DVD, WinVid, InterVid, etc..., at Dell's support site or filehippo.com. I use Power DVD on mine with no problems. Also, the configuration that you have will not have a noticeable or any effect on videos. They will play fine, once you have a decoder.
