This is called file system over head. When you "format" a drive in Windows for example, the operating system uses a certain portion of the space for allocating the file system, Master File Table, and partition information. So, the 298 you see, is the formatted capacity. The larger the drive, the more "reserved space" is used. If you find this helpful, please leave positive feedback.

Most commonly, 297 GB is the formatted capacity of the 320 GB hard drive. You can check if there is any unpartitioned space left on your hard drive. Right click My Computer, click Manage, click Disk Management, locate the hard drive which shows 297 GB (a big reactangle). If this rectangle is all the way from left to right, everything is fine. Else it will also show another rectangle next to it as Unpartitioned space which you can format and use.

My win2k adv server with sp4 finds 137gb space on a 250gb sata int hdd. how can i utilize full space where i m using 945 m/b

It's complicated to explain, but basically, you never get the full amount of space on your hard drive. For instance, a 320gb drive will always provide you with aprox. 298gb of space. However, your 137 vs 250 is a bit extreme. Is this a new hard drive? Have you made sure you have properly formatted and partitioned the drive? If this is a used drive, the previous owner may have it partitioned to use only part if the drive, so in this case I would try and format it.

Dear! It show perfect because 1Gb = 1024 MB so if you calculate it you will find it equal to 298 GB because it is binary system shows while vendors account 1GB = 1000 MB but we format it according to binary machine language so that's equal to 298GB. I hope you have make sense.
Thank You

When i connected it to my pc it shows tht its capacity is only 298 gb even though it is printed on the box tht ir is 320gb

That is because the manufacturers do not use the proper calculation for working out the sizes.
1GB = 1024 x 1024 Kbytes or 1,073,741,824bytes (10243, 230).
The disk manufacturers all call 1,000,000,000 a gigabyte - so your 320gigabyte disk is actually 320,000,000,000 bytes / 1,073,741,824 = 298Gb.

Capactiy of external hardrive

That's normal. Storage manufacturers consider 1 GB at 1 billion bytes (1,000,000,000 bytes).

Computers, however, use base-2 arithmetic, and one kilobyte is 1024 bytes, one megabyte is 1024 kilobytes, and one gigabyte is 1024 megabytes. This all multiples to 1 gigabyte according to the computer is 1024^3 or 1,073,741,824 bytes.

Take 320,000,000,000 and divide it by 1,073,741,824 and you get 298.023223876953125, so your computer says your "320GB" drive is 298GB.

There's a standard for base-2 (binary) measurement terminology (gibibytes, mebibytes, kibibytes, etc), but few people seem to use it.
