Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

I moved my computer to another room. When I installed WD external drive, it is not seen on my computer. I may have insert the connecting cable with computer and drive on the wrong way and maybe damage the port? When I put the cable on the wrong way to the port, light comes on but the drive is nor seen on my computer. Help!

If you get no joy using the Troubleshooting Guide then try this...
You will need to check You Tube to find a Dismantle on your product and follow the step guide on here, the procedure should be similar.
Check 1st that your External HDD has an P.C. internal HDD inside, from You Tube, before dismantle of your External HDD. Connections for an Internal Laptop HDD may have same connections as P.C. not sure though.
Once your happy that it has continue reading and follow the step guide on the link below.
My neighbour has the Seagate FreeAgent Desk 500GB, and in under 2 weeks it started to beep and was not reconized by any Laptop or P.C. if this is the same for you with any FreeAgent Desk series ( not GO series, different procedure for GO products). Hello,

Connect the external drive to another computer and observe if it's going to work perfectly on that computer.

Which ever the case may be, here is what you need to do on your computer;

Insert the external drive into your computer

Go to device manager.

Go to the name of the external drive.

Right click on the external drive and click 'Uninstall"

Allow the external drive uninstall from your computer.

If possible uninstall every other device under the "Universal serial bus controller (usb).

Once this is done, disconnect/remove the external drive from your computer.

Restart your computer.

Wait a while for the computer to boot computer. Also whatever you have uninstalled from the device manager, might install automatically. Which ever the case maybe, make sure your computer has finished booting or installing any device before you attempt to insert the external drive into the usb.

Now insert the external drive and wait for the computer to install the external drive, then observe if it will open this time around.

By now it should open. But if it doesn't open, please let me know so that I may direct you further on what next to do.

External hard drive not connecting to pc


When you connect the external HD to the PC it should automatically do a search and you should be able to see in in MY Computer. Try moving the USB cable to another USB port. Maybe the port is bad. Finally, just review all the install steps to make sure you never overlooked a detail.

When i inserted an external drive to my pc, then i want to access to this external drive, it says the request could not be performed due to io device error.


io error means that the "Input/Output" is not working. This could be due of different reasons. Try the following:
1. try it on another computer if it works, it's something with your computer. Could be hardware (e.g. loose connected cable or driver) 2. try another USB cable, if it works, its due of the USB cable (or the cable has loose contact)

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy a new W.D. device, through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

Most of the time, "self-inflicted" damage is EXCLUDED from W.D.'s "warranty" for the drive.
So, it depends on your sense of "ethics" whether to file a warranty-claim.

My computer recognizes the WD but i cant view my files


Sounds like to me you already did the troubleshooting. If you cannot get the drive to function properly on another computer and it has the same symptoms, then logic would say that it is your drive. Note to also use a different cable to make sure it isn't the cable. I would try it on at least two more computers to make sure, hopefully with at least XP and Vista.

ESATA Connection problem with My Book & my laptop w/ Vista


Had the same problem with a WD esata 1TB drive and an HP DV6 laptop. Using Vista home premium. Lots of experimentation BIOS settings and driver update, and finally fixed it by trimming back a couple of mm of the plastic shoulders on each connector of the esata cable. A few depth measurements and it became clear that the connectors weren't going in deep enough otherwise. The cable was a Belkin of reasonable quality.

No problems now, but the drive is only recognized if it's connected at boot-up.

The core of the problem is the external casing of both the laptop and the WD drive enclosure. They're thick and keep the cable connector from going in far enough. Perhaps manufacturers of the cables or the esata devices are sloppy, or the standard isn't specified well enough. I've seen pictures of esata cables that have significantly different dept.
