Question about Poulan 42-Inch Steel Deck 17.5 HP Briggs & Stratton I/C Engine With 6 Speed

2 Answers

Poulan riding mower starts and runs for a few minutes then "chokes out" and stops running, why? If I let it sit for about 30 minutes I can restart it and finish the lawn. Now it runs for a few minutes chokes out and will not restart.

If you have already changed your fuel filter and spark plug, look at your fuel tank cap. The breathing holes may be clogged with dirt or debris preventing good fuel flow. I happened to spend $150 bucks for this $5 fix. Hope this helps.

I agree with the first solution. To verify that it is the holes that allows the gas tank to breath, when the engine cuts out, loosen the cap and listen for a vacuum hissing sound. Tighten cap and see if engine starts up immediately. If it does, replace the gas cap with a new one. You can try to clean the old one out, but who's to say that it will clog faster vs a new cap. Just. Suggestion.

I had a bad run of watery gas which caused this same symptom. turns out some how i was getting water in the gas not sure if it was someone sabotaging the gas can or if there was a crack allowing rain water but after many issues with starting al of my lawn equipment i finally got a jar and poured the gas into it and discovered gas 2/3 water 1/3 i had to separate the gas from the water and clean out the carbs on all my equipment finally resolved the issue bought new storage containers and no more issues. replace spark plugs as well water tends to ruin the spark plugs fast hope this helps.

My mtd mower with 15.5 hp engine starts and runs for 5 to 10 minutes and quits. It will usually restart with the choke on and run for a few minutes more and quit again. It will finally not restart.

More than likely a carb problem. What kind of fuel you use makes a difference. If ethanol, causes corrosion inside carb. Or maybe something easy as air filter.

Exmark lazer HP 19 Kawasaki 50" deck new PTO and new relays blades engage for 30 minutes then shut off engine on. After cooling will engage for 10 minutes then shut off

Engine valves need adjusting.
symptoms: starts ok, runs until engine reaches max temp loses power then stops. can't restart when hot. once restarted runs for a while stops again.

There is very little clerance in these valves and temperature alters the lenth by a few thou and the valve don't close fully losing compression, once cold the valves shrink back enough to create enough compression to start again.

Starts right up on choke. then run inrun position for a minute and have to go back to choke to keep it running ,then it runs fine for a couple of minutes and have to go back to choke and start all over...

Try cleaning or replacing the air filter.

When you are in choke, it is not using very much air, it is running a very rich mixture. When you switch it to run, then it demands more air and it sounds like its being starved.

Loosen fuel cap 1 turn to see if it will stay running.Theres a tank breather hole/vent in the cap and when it becomes plugged no air can get into fuel tank when fuel is used, can also be a plugged fuel filter.

Motor will start but will just stop after a few minutes.

Hi Spraker,

This sounds like a fuel filter with just enough dirt in it to allow some gas to seep through, but when the engine is started it will not provide enough to keep it running. Locate and close the spring tabs on either end of the filter. You will need to push something (a small bolt perhaps) in the ends of the fuel lines to prevent gas from coming out on both ends. Elevate them as well.

When you put the new filter own, you will have to use the choke more than usual to pump gas into the filter and up to the carb. If this isn't it, it is likely the fuel pump. Please write us back and let us know!

Snowblower won't start- electric or manual - has only been used a few times and always had difficulty starting it Model 8524

Sounds like its flooded. This same exact thing just happened to me.
Suggestion:

Let it sit with the the choke off. After a few hours, try starting it again, but don't mess with the choke (leave the choke set as if it was running hot). By your pulling of the recoil cord, you will be helping to clean out the flooded engine. Don not prime it during this excercise. (only pull the recoil 4 or 5 times).

Then let it sit again for a few hours.

After that waiting period, you should be able to start as normal, use the electroic start to get it going and lest it run, as normal.

You should then be all set.
