Typically on a Dell desktop, when the A/B lights are amber and the C/D lights remain green, this indicates a hardware failure. The display not appearing (and you may even hear a series of beeps when powering on your computer, as well) this usually points to the memory (RAM) as being defective or faulty or the motherboard memory slots could be defective causing the system to not read the RAM modules.
Please follow the steps below to determine which component is defective or faulty.
Before beginning, you will need the following:
A. Computer B. Replacement RAM (if necessary)
Solution A. Memory (RAM) Defect
1. Disconnect the power cable from the computer 2. Open the desktop by pushing in the 2 black buttons found along the rear-sides of the unit. Once the lock is released, pull the top-lid toward you to open the station like a **** shell. 3. Once opened, locate the memory module(s) and release the locking clips on both sides to unseat the RAM. 4. Remove each RAM module individually and set aside carefully until all the RAM has been removed. 5. There are usually 2 RAM slots on the GX260. Starting with Slot #1, use one of the RAM modules and reinsert it, making sure to lock in the clips. 6. Reconnect the power cable and power on the computer. 7. Continue to repeat steps 5-6 until you have tested each RAM module in each available memory slot individually. If the computer continues to display the amber A/B diagnostic lights, then the RAM is likely faulty, but to be certain, skip down to Solution B, step #1.

Solution B. Memory (RAM) Replacement
1. Disconnect the power cable to the computer. 2. Remove any existing RAM module(s). 3. Install the new, replacement RAM module and lock in the clips. 4. Connect the power cable and power on the computer. If the system boots correctly, then the RAM was indeed faulty. If the system continues to display the same issue, then skip down to Solution C, step #1. 5. Close the computer lid. 6. Recycle the faulty RAM at your nearest facility.

Solution C. Motherboard Replacement
After following solutions A & B, if the problem persists, than the likely culprit is the motherboard and defective RAM slots. This is an early indicator of a growing problem. As the motherboard continues on, it will eventually spread possibly causing the USB ports to not detect external devices, add-on expansion cards to not work and the network connection to die out. Unfortunately, the only solution to this issue is replacing the failing motherboard with a new model.
This can typically cost from $85-300 depending on the make/model and age of the board replaced directly from the manufacturer. A replacement motherboard can be purchased from a 3rd-party manufacturer, such Asus, Gigabyte, etc. for about $45-150, however, this will depend on the type of board your purchase and due to customized nature of the chassis on most consumer-level systems, some user find that the new, 3rd-party boards do not fit properly or in some cases do not support their older components (RAM, CPU, Video, etc.) which now means they need to spend more money on upgrading the rest of the required equipment to make it compatible.
This may not be cost effective since it will most likely cost more to upgrade the individual parts of the computer than to purchase a new system - which will include a minimum of 1-yr. manufacturer warranty.

Can't get computer to turn on (compaq presario 5000)


Either your Hard drive (hd) crashed or your hd cable or port is faulty. if your software is corrupt boot with a boot disk (assume you are using XP or Vista), press R on the blue options screen. you will be given a black dos prompt screen. Type in fixboot and type Y for an answer.

Light goes green but no display.


Definitely Power Supply Board. Check carefully for open 1/8 watt metal film resistors. They wont show signs of overheating but they can be open anyway. I've never been able to find a print either. Once you do find open resistors make sure you measure for shorted components in the associated circuit.

SOLID AMBER LIGHT ON DIMENSION 3000


One of two things:

Either the power supply is marginal

or

the motherboard is bad.

Solid amber light on front amber on mother board


Hello,
take the PSU (Power Supply Unit) from a known working computer, preferable to be the same model and test with it. when you do so make sure you disconnect any peripherals e.g ( Printer, CD-ROM, Floppy).

Look closely at the memory bay for any bent pins, and test with one memory at the time.
