First 4-5 copies are poor quality, then it clears up and makes a descent copy. Do it again and it is the same thing. Turn it off and turn it on same thing. Changed blade, new toner and waste receptecal. Seems to be using a great deal of toner compared to normal.
Drum looks new and has only got 5k on it. Also, had full p.m. 5 k ago.

Most common cause is going to be you need to have the scanner optics cleaned. Hopefully you have a local repair guy that can do this for you. However you can buy new basic fax machine like this now days for $75 to $80 which might be cheaper than servicing the old one.
Here is a tip for you tho. Make a copy using your fax machine. The quality of your copy is the same quality that you are sending out via the fax. So if your copy looks good then your outgoing faxes look fine. If you get a poor copy then that poor quality is what is being sent out. So copy quality = fax send quality.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.
Try making a copy on your machine and see what the copy looks like.
What are you sending,??? if its a second carbon copy of something...remember what you see is what you get...if the original is poor quality the receiver will get poor quality. You can darken the image slightly...refer to your operators manual.
NOTE: Some Status codes will not clear even though the problem has been fixed. Status codes that will not clear must be manually reset using the 'Fault Reset 14 Procedure'.
Locate the [C] (Clear) button on the Control Panel, at the far right.
Locate the Image Quality button, below the Auto on the Control Panel, toward the left side.
Press the buttons in the following sequence within 4 seconds. Press [C] (Clear), press [Image Quality], press [C] (Clear) again, press [Image Quality] again.
The error code should disappear. If the Status code does not clear, repeat step 3 until the status code clears; but no more than five times.
Use the [10] and [1] buttons to enter 14 on the Display Screen, as if you were to make 14 copies.
Press the [Start] button. The machine should be ready to use.
Make a copy, to check that the machine is working properly.
I found that I had to adjust the settings or my copies were almost illegible. Instead of copying at greyscale or black & white, try setting for color copies (even if using a black & white laser printer) and 600 dpi. It takes a few seconds longer to scan, but you get very clear copies that way.
If you have the old drum put it back in and see what happens to the copy. if is better, then yu may have a bad new drum. They do have them. Poor copy quality is normally drum or toner in these Brothers. This model is an excellent machine by the way.
