Question about Garden

1 Answer

Have a Weedeater BV185 with WA229 carb. ****** has never run right since the day I bought it. After sitting for a couple years the fuel line in the tank dissolved. Replaced those and I think I have them on correctly. The small diameter on goes on the carb port away from the primer bulb and the larger diameter one goes on the port near the bulb. I put the filter on the smaller line. I disassembled the carb and all the gaskets look good, the fuel pump diaphragm looks fine. Pulled the needle valve and cleaned it. A little gas directly in the cylinder and it will fire and the plug has spark. When I try to prime it, I get nothing in the bulb. The fuel line is full of gas, the return is full of air. No smell of fuel in the carb. Any thoghts as to when I can do to get it started?

I would like to know if the primeer bulb should fill with gas. It seems to me that it's not getting fuel. Should the bulb fill with fuel? should the return have fuel in it? If I prime it a dozen time should I not smell gas (flooding)?

How do I check the timing?

  • dan0256 Aug 27, 2010

Check gap - timing is non-adjustable.

  • dan0256 Aug 27, 2010

I agree that there is a fuel restriction. I just can't find where. I did remove the needle, but I didn't see a screen. It all went back the way it came out. I'll double check again tomorrow. See if I can find this screen.

You have been very thorough in maintaining the carburretta and since you have had problems ever since you bought it, you should look elsewhere to solve the problem.

I suggest that you check the spark gap on the plug and check the timing. An incorrect spark gap effectively alters the timing and if the basic setting of the spark gap is wrong then starting can be effected.

I don't know your machine well enough to give any advice on how to check the timing. Does your manual say anything on this?

(Timing usually involves using a strobe light shining on magneto when the machine is running0>

  • dan0256 Aug 27, 2010

Manual says timing is fixed and not adjustable.
I'll check the spark gap, but I still think it's not priming right.

  • dan0256 Aug 27, 2010

Spark plug gap is correct at .025

When I turn on my bike, gas runs out of the bottom of the bike. It is a 89 Gold Wing. IT has been sitting maybe a couple years. I bought it like this. I'm going to start a tare down this weekend. Just...

I would have say the float in your carb is stuck. Take the bowl off the bottom and see if your float needle is sticking if not check your fuel line's .

Hi, Anonymous if your bike has been idle for months or years and does not want to start you will have to deal with a few remedies:
1. Drain and flush fuel tank, google " how to clean a motorcycle gas tank" find a couple forums to view the different options available.
2. Remove your air cleaner and clean and re-oil per Mfg. specifications.
3. Remove the carburetor, disassemble and decontaminate with a carb dip or if you have EFI remove injectors and clean with carb spray and compressed air
4. Remove fuel valve and filter disassemble and clean as necessary, remove fuel lines and replace with new ones.
5. Replace spark plug with a new one and check for spark.

Sounds as though the fuel filter may be plugged. The filter is in the tank. Take a look, see if it is visible. Remove and replace. Good luck...Lee

Check the fuel lines for cracks/breaks. If they are o.k., then:

Youwill need to disassemble the carburetor and spray withcarb.cleaner.Make sure the small screen is free of debris. (Should beable to see daylight through it.)

Use a Den Tek Brush, (http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=165357&catid=1152),to clean the small portals in carb. These portals can become blocked. Reassemble and start.

If the carb. parts are more than 4 years old, you may have to replace them.

If you need further assistance on:
1. Fuel line replacement or
2. Carburetor kit replacement

Just let me know.

I've had similar trouble. I removed the plastic cover to expose the fuel lines. I've had to replace all of them as each one had dry rotted, split or had holes. There are four runs of clear plastic fuel line. Check all your lines and then check for any of it being plugged up to the carberator. The primer bulb should develop some pressure when all is good.
