Relighting the pilot of any water heater is a pain. The first thing to do is call the water heaters manufacturer for information on your specific make and model. If your water heater is under warranty, they will provide technical advice and free parts.
1. Replace the water heater's thermocouple. Make sure the pilot flame is centered on the shiny end of the thermocouple; it requires a certain amount of heat to produce enough electricity to open the main gas control valve.
2. Replace the main gas valve control.
3. Replace the water heater; I know this not what anyone wants hear.

The pilot light on the water heater went out and the red light is blinking four times on the thermostat (Honeywell WV8860B1317). How do I get this to stop so that the pilot light can be relit?

The flashing light 4 times indicates high water temperature has activated the over heat sensor, and that the only remedy is to replace the gas control valve/thermostat.

The other day our Aquastar 125 pilot went out. No problem, I relit it. It has gone out several times since then. But when I relight it, it often turns the burner on as if the faucet is running. AF

Safety valve is overheated water.
Sounds like the flow control sensor or other sensors, or pc board are bad.
You need service technician to diagnose problem and replace part.

Or replace whole thing with tank-type heater.

I have a 50 gallon gas Whirlpool water heater that I installed March of 2005. It's a 9 year warranty. It just started to flame out this morning. I relit, then turned to warm. It started to light up,...

Hi, I work in a plumbing store and that problem you described is related to a piece called thermocoupling, its a coppery thin line that heats up and controls the flow of the gas. If not this then I would check to see if your flue pipe is a bit clogged as the heat is not able to flow up quickly enough. Another culprit can be a problem with the vent pipe on the roof, as a non properly functioning vent will let draft down to the flue pipe. Most likely I think it is the thermocoupling though. Hope this helps!

Water heater pilot keeps going out. Relight and may stay lit for a day and then goes out again. Now won't even light at all. Has an igniter button. Also says to clean intake screen every 6 months. Where is...

the intake screen or as is called flame trap is located on the very bottom of the heater underneath. this is very important that you keep this clean or it will keep going out. this is the only way this heater has to get air to the burning chamber.

Pilot light goes out after every use(shower). It must be relit each time

If the pilot is going out after it cycles this is normally the gas valve that is cutting off the pilot after the heater is satisfied. The only exception to this is if your heater is very old you may try to change the thermocouple first. However, if this does not work then it sounds like the gas valve.
Please refer to the manufacturer for the correct parts your heater uses. You will normally find the manufacturer's phone number on the side of your heater along with your model and serial number.

Aquastar 125b ng: after 2 years of use water is not hot enough

Sounds like hard water. Service the water valve. Parts are available from your local Bosch Service Provider (Contact Bosch if you don't know who the service provider is).

On demand water heater won't stay lit

It's the gas valve. This pretty common. The thermocouple produces a small amount of current from the heat and this current holds the safety valve open inside the gas valve. Sometimes the safety valve gets sticky and your symptoms describe it exactly. People are always frustrated by the time it is certain to be the valve. You need to replace the valve. No one is allowed to fix a gas valve - liability - gas etc. Replace the gas valve and your problem will be solved. I am a master plumber/gasfitter and I am confident that this will solve the problem. Been there - done that.
