Question about Sylvania SRPD442 42 in. EDTV-Ready Plasma Television
A bad capacitor is a possibility, but lets define the problem first.
The set is shutting down because a problem is detected. This is commonly known as "protect" mode. With plasma sets, there are many reasons for this to happen. There are effectively at least 2 stages of power supply inside these sets. 1) The standard power supply that drives the video processing etc and 2) the plasma suplpy. A fault in either supply stage can cause this problem. I would not suggest just changing capacitors without an understanding of the function of that part. The cap may have been damaged as the result of another part failure. Just changing the cap without furthrer investigation can lead to more problems. This may not always be the case, but it can happen. At the very least, I would suggest that you invest in a detailed repair estimate from an authorized service center. At least that way you can have some cinfidense that the repair will be correct and long lasting.

Let me break this down, The tv powers up for 10 seconds the shuts off. This issue would be in the power supply board now let me break down the possiable causes not you got to be aware I am not there I never seen your tv ext ext.
1. Bad eletrolytic capacitor"
*This is caused by stress, heat, dust, and the list goes on. what happends is the eletrlytic capacitor basically swells up or leaks causeing it to fill and the drain real quick "cutting off the flow of eletricty to the rest of the tv ultmatly shutting it down"
A capacitor looks like this
These capcitors cost $2.00 with a soldering iron , solder removal and some tools you can extract these and put in new ones. WARNING: It may contain voltage left over so if you do not know what your doing by all means leave it to the tv repair guy. I do not want Fixya on the 11 o clock news, or my **** in court explaining why I told a novice to extract one of these. You can get a jolt it can cause injury up including your death. So with that in mind if you do not know do not touch.
With all the warning aside now that you understand the dangerious voltages you basically extract the old and put in the new.
DO NOT SHOOT THE MESSENGER
Please be safe. There are plenty of youtube videos on how end users saved thousands of bucks on TV repair.
Have a nice day It would be considerate if you left a rating and feedback before you go. Many thanks for using fixya.com
