My dehumidifier turns on an the fan blows and the compresser kicks on but its not pulling any water from the air. The controls on the control panel wont change when you press the buttons. I need a answer for both these questions. This is a dh504el goldstar.

  • keithpfeifer Aug 26, 2010

What about the settings on the control panel? I can't set the timer or change the humidity setting. Could this be connected to why it isn't drawing any water out of the air.

    Thanks,

    Keith

Wow, this sounds like you might have two problems. The coils could need cleaning, which would explain the unit not drawing moisture from the air. However, the humidity and timer inability to change settings would seem to indicate a bad control board.
Here is the cleaning process for the coils, as explained by another tech on FixYa:

The problem is probably due to dirty or clogged coils. Cleaning the coils to a dehumidifier is similar to cleaning the coils on an air conditioner. It really depends on how dirty the coils are. If it is not too dirty you can use a shop vacuum with a brush attachment. If it is really dirty you will have to use a non acidic hvac coil cleaner or you can use a household cleaner like Simple Green that has been diluted 1:1 with water and placed in a spray bottle. Spray the solution on and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Make sure you unplug the unit before doing anything. If you use Simple Green make sure you spray it down with clean water. If you use an hvac type coil cleaner some do not require rinsing. Follow the directions on the product exactly. You might have to use a brush or even a putty knife if the coil is totally clogged. Be careful you do not damage the coil. Good luck! Here is another FixYa suggestion for a similar humidifier, and may be of help: noavatar.png DickyIV1

Hi,
If you haven't done so already, try removing and cleaning the inlet filter screen which is almost certainly just behing the inlet grille. It may slide upwards out of the casing or downwards unto the bucket area. If this is blocked with fluff then no moist air will get to the cold pipes, so little or no water will be extracted. There's also a chance that the humidity sensor is clogged with fluff, so fooling the system into thinking the room is pretty dry, in which case the compressor will probably not run.
A running compressor can usually be detected as a deep throbbing from the machine. If it is running, but not cooling the pipes behind the intake grille, then you may have lost the refrigerant from the system via a leak. If the air coming out of the machine is warm (caused by the compressor running) but there is no water produced this may be the cause.
Maybe if the unit runs correctly, the speed setting and timer settings will work, hopefully. Good luck, hope this helps, and thanks for using FixYa.

A dehumidifier works in a very similar manner to an air conditioner. The unit draws air across a set of refrigerated coils called a condenser. Moisture in the warm air collects on the cooled coils and drips down into the collection tray. There are several reasons why it wouldn't collect water. The first and simplest reason would be that there just isn't enough moisture in the air for it to collect.
The unit has a humidistat built into it that reads the moisture content of the air and tells the unit when to turn on or off. If the humidistat is malfunctioning, the unit might not turn on when it's supposed to.
The dehumidifier has a compressor. The compressor is one of the components that's used in the process of cooling the coils. If the compressor is not working, the coils won't get cold, and thus will not collect water.
The coils may have sprung a leak, thus leaking the refrigerant out. No refrigerant means the coils won't get cold.
--------- If your dehumidifier doesn't seem to run often but the humidity in the room is high, try adjusting the humidistat control on the dehumidifier to a dryer setting. If the dehumidifier seems to run constantly, but there's little or no water in the container, there may be a problem in the refrigeration system. Try cleaning the unit. If that doesn't work, then the refrigeration system needs to be repaired. ---------- If you have a dehumidifier that is not producing any water then you are wondering what you need to do to get this thing to work for you. In some cases you may be able to do something and in other situations there may be nothing that you can do.

If you do not hear the compressor running and the unit says that the humidity in the room is higher then the setting, then you have a problem with your dehumidifier.

A few things that can cause this are:

The circuit board relay has gone bad…replacement of this board will often cost more then a new unit. This also is a very common problem with many dehumidification units.
The compressor has failed…if you hear a buzz for a few seconds, every few minutes, then you have a bad compressor or at least bad start components on the compressor. Either way it again is a costly repair.

If the compressor is running and the coils are not getting cold then you have a refrigeration system leak. Recharging or fixing these units is very difficult and is another costly venture compared to the price of a new dehumidifier.

If the compressor is running but the fan is not, this also will cause low water production and continual freezing of the coil.

If the compressor and the fan are running but the coil is totally blocked then you will get no water production. Air needs to be continually moved over the cold coil to get the water out of the air.

If nothing is running, then you may also have a control board failure.
------------ Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Hi,
If you have a dehumidifier that is not producing any water then you are wondering what you need to do to get this thing to work for you.

Or the humidity sensor orhumidistat has gone bad which tells the machine to run. If the sensor says that the humidity is low enough then it will never run.

Also if nothing is running check the float switch or the bucket switch. Many of these switches are very touchy and if you do not have the bucket in place just exactly right it will not trip the switch to allow the unit to run. These switches often are more fragile then they should be and break easily. The good thing is that when available they are easy to replace and relatively inexpensive.

There are some parts available for a few brands, but with the prices for most of the parts that you can replace running anywhere from 40.00 – 80.00 dollars, replacement parts with labor to install them, makes a repair more then the few hundred dollar cost of many of these dehumidifiers.

As you can see there are quite a few things that can cause your dehumidifier not to work. Systematically go through the list and eliminate things to get to the bottom of the issue causing your problem and then decide if it is worth spending the money to try to fix the old unit. Only you can make that decision.

I have a DH504EL. Should the fan run constantly? It hums, so I know the motor is running, but the fan isn't moving>

if the fan is simply humming but not turning over take the back cover off and make sure the blower piece is free turning. i used to have a dehumidifier(goldstar similar model long sold though) it had a bad thermal fuse in the fan motor but compressor worked perfect. bolt is i think 10mm and i had to peel the tape off of the motor windings to get at the fuse. soldered new one in(p/o gave me new fuse and 10 bucks to get it out of his hair what a deal:) ) and retaped the windings. also the felt bearings may be loose but i just lubed the front and back bearing housings well with syn-lube(valvoline for brakes) and reassembled. baby oil works wonders so does vasoline but due to heat that trick does not last long before making a racket and leaves a **** on the assemblies underneath(mess) so try the high temp lube or any moly based brake lube

Stopped operation...fan does not work...compressor get's very hot

It is very normal for the compressor to get very hot, almost to the point of being able to fry an egg on it. So it is important to keep everything clean and dirt, dustfree. Clean the fan blades, tubing and anything that you can do to ensure good air flow.

Unit runs and you can hear the compressor come on but it is not pulling any moisture out of the air

if it seems to be running normally except no cooling , is the fan in the house running????...Is the house Cold and damp???.If there is no cooling and you know that the compressor and everything else appears to be normal then you likely have a Refrigerant leak and that will cause no cooling.....Usually a very expensive repair...if your unit is 5-10+ yrs old you likely need a new "A" coil.

DH504EL Unit runs but does not collect water

Demumidifiers are small air comdition units with heaters. Without the change of temp they won't work. Units are often neglected and get pluged up so clean and test the air flow. The filter slowes the air speed down for the process to work properly. Finally the units run better if balanced but slightly tipped twards the drip side. You may need a bigger unit the compresser should cycle (it needs to turn off once in a while)

Runs all the time, not collecting water

I don't know your particular unit, but my guess is that the compressor is bad. If it is old, it may not be worth fixing.
