SOURCE: solenoid will not shut off gas when switch is off.

Have your mower running in park
pull the wire off off the solenoid if it is working correctly your mower will shut down less than 10 sec.
if not then it will have to be removed and inspected
sometimes the plunger gets hung up with dirt and or rust and or moisture
remove it and free it up manually and retry when you see it is not stuck anymore and operates without sticking

If you have two wires coming from under engine shroud, a black and red, plugged into a connector with a white and black wire going to the mower, It's a Dual Circuit alternator.

SOURCE: 2000 camry. blown head gasket (daughter drove car

Yes, you can, but not exactly recommended. If you are going to go that deep into it, then might as well do everything else. However, being unemployed tends to have a negative impact on the wallet....

I suspect it is more than just rings. I think that the walls have been scored badly as well. You may be able to use a borescope to take a peak into the cylinder through spark plug hole. Move the piston to bottom of stroke, and see what you can see. If scarred, much work will be needed. If hatches look alright, then you might be able to get away with just rings.

What kind of compression are you getting on #1 vs #2? This also might be a blown headgasket into an oil passage, or the head (perhaps block?) is ever so slightly warped in this area.

I have a Briggs stratton 14 hp ohv I/c quiet model 287707. I had a guy change the oil & he put 10W30 synthetic oil in it. Now it smokes white smoke really bad. I think he put the wrong oil in

There is a very real difference between 30W and 10W30 oil. Whether it's synthetic or not probably doesn't matter. If you have the literature that came with the mower, it will tell you the recommended engine oil.
If they put in the wrong oil, they should make it right. You shouldn't have to pay twice for an oil change. It could be burning oil, since 10W30 is a lower viscosity than 30W. I would have them change it again, and see if it stops smoking.

I have a craftsman lawnmower with a 24 horse intek motor with the 4 screws holding air filter. it has started leaking oil at base of the left jug. it is leaking right at the bottom of it so i cant see...

I am assuming you are calling the cylinder the jug on the engine. If you think the engine is leaking oil from the cylinder you have to replace the crankcase. The cylinder does not separate form the crankcase as they do on atvs. If you see the leak at a gasket, it could be a blown head gasket, valve cover gasket or a sump gasket. The sump gasket is the gasket between the crankcase and the sump. The sump is the part of the engine the mounting screws thread into. The valve cover gasket is between the head and the stamped steel cover. Replacing the valve cover gasket is easy. Just remove the four bolts to remove the cover. Then clean the old gasket off. You can apply a thin layer of rtv to help seal the valve cover. The head gasket is between the cylinder and the head of the engine. If this gasket fails, the engine can burn oil and/or leak oil. The head gasket is more involved to replace. You need a set of feeler gauges and a toque wrench to do the repair

I have a mountfield sp470 petrol self proppelled lawn mower. the engine is briggs& stratton but i dont know the engine model. i need this as the cylinder head gasket has gone and needs replacing.

Hi. The SP470 has a 4 HP Briggs and Stratton engine.

The part number should be 687171 and you can look here:

Take a good look at the valve end of the head gasket. From the pictures on the page you should be able to see which one of the 4 head gaskets on the page is yours.

If you have yellow pages you can look up lawn mower repair. Or small engine repair shops. All of them should have this commonly used headgasket in stock. Just find one close to you or.. use the link above.

Here is yet another link for the head gaskets but you have to scroll way way down the page or page search for 698717 or 272171.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.
