Question about Toshiba Satellite Pro L300D-EZ1001V Notebook

I would like to reinstall Windows Vista on my laptop. I have made the two recovery DVDs, but am not sure how to proceed. When I insert disk 1, there is no autostart. Instead, I only have the option to explore the disk. Any ideas?

Tried that, but no luck. Restarted laptop, pressed f12 to go to the boot menu when prompted and chose the 'boot from cd/dvd' option. It went to a black screen and said something about Realtek and how some media test failed and to 'check cable' or something. It tried to do the test twice and I guess it failed both times. Then it just started Windows normally from that point.

What do you mean by the 'optical unit'? I don't buy it. My cd and dvd drive works fine. I just burned the recovery disks to dvd the other day!

  • satellite1 Aug 26, 2010

This worked, thanks. There was nothing wrong with my dvd drive, as another expert suggested. I think the error about media check failure might have been related to an external hard drive of mine.

I'm not sure how to change the rating!

Hi There,

Here are the steps.

1. With the laptop on, insert Disc 1 and then turn the computer completely off.
2. Depress the power button and immediately begin tapping the F12 key (some Toshibas use F11) which will take you to a screen with choices of which device to boot your computer from.
3. Select the DVD drive using the up and down arrows and hit ENTER.
4. A message will appear saying "press any key to boot from cd (or DVD). Do so quickly.
5. Your recovery discs will then prompt you to some choices. Choose the recovery that restores you to the original factory install and follow any prompts after that to complete the process.

Good Luck

That error message tells you that the optical unit in your laptop has failed. Before reinstalling Windows you must replace it with a new one. Luckily this is a cheap fix - less than $50 for a new dvd-writer.

media test failed = the BIOS tried to read the disk and it failed. The test was designed to check the communication between the motherboard and the optical unit  - since it told you to check the cable that means that the test failed, the unit isn't accessible. Unless you have subjected the laptop to shocks great enough to dislodge the cable between the writer and the motherboard , it means that the writer has died.
Simple test - try to burn something else now.

HP recovery disks don't boot!

Sounds like you need a windows vista operating system disc. The recovery discs set your system back to factory settings like when you first brought it home from the store. But to me, the system is bloated with all the software and trial junk that you don't need. If you can get your hands on a Vista Operating System Disc, then do a clean install from it. Just make sure your Certificate Of Authentication (COA) sticker is readable so that you can activate the vista once you've got it loaded. If you can't get your hands on a system disc, take it to a computer repair shop, I would think you could find one that will load the operating system for $60 or less.

My hp laptop with windows vista home premium is not booting and showing to insert bootable disk, which I don't have.how i can get this

The installed Windows in your laptop has been corrupted beyond repair - you will have to reinstall it.
For that pres F11 during boot to launch the HP Recovery Manager from the recovery partition then follow the instruction. If even that fails it means that the hard disk itself has failed - the disk will have to be replaced and to reinstall Windows you will have to order a recovery cd for your exact model from HP.

How do you go about to format a toshiba l650 and reinstall windows 7

Hi! If you have the Windows 7 disc just insert it restart the computer. It will boot directly from the disc. Then follow the step by step instructions here.
If you don't have the Windows 7 disc, you have two ways to reformat your Toshiba computer.
Using Toshiba HDD Recovery Utility from the recovery partition
In case of a hard disk drive failure, you may be able to restore the drive to the factory default state using the on-disk Toshiba HDD Recovery Utility (in a special partition on the hard disk drive).
You can select restoring the entire hard disk drive to the factory default state, or restoring only the C: drive -- without affecting other partitions (for example, a D: drive) -- or changing the size allocated to your C: drive, and then restore it.
To recover your hard disk drive from a system failure using the utilities stored on your computers HDD, follow these steps:
  1. If the computer is running, shut it down -- by clicking Start, Shut Down, and again Shut Down.
  2. Press and hold the 0 (zero) key on your keyboard and then press the computers power switch. When the computer turns on, the Toshiba HDD Recovery Utility screen will appear, presenting three options:

Restore Original Factory Image (Recommended)
CAUTION:
Restoring a hard disk drive to its factory default state deletes all partitions on the hard disk drive and all data stored on those partitions. All of your files and information will be lost! Be sure to back up all important files first.
  1. Press 1 to restore your hard disk drive to its original factory default state. A confirmation message will appear, indicating that all data will be overwritten and lost during the restore process. Be sure to back up all important files before proceeding.
  2. Click Yes to begin the recovery. A message will appear once the operation is finished, indicating the HDD has been restored.
  3. Press any key to restart the computer.
* The options 2 & 3 are for advanced users.
Hard Disk Drive Recovery using Recovery CDs or DVDs
You may also wish to to run the Toshiba HDD Recovery Utility from Recovery CDs or DVDs that you have created.

Insert the first Recovery CD or DVD into your CD/DVD drive, and turn on the computer. Once the computer is running, the TOSHIBA HDD Recovery Utility screen will appear, presenting the same three options above. Again Press 1 to
restore your hard disk drive to its original factory default state. Click Yes to begin the recovery. Press any key to restart the computer.

Installing Drivers and Applications
The TOSHIBA Application Installer allows you to reinstall the drivers and applications that were originally bundled with your computer.
To reinstall drivers and applications:
  1. Double-click the "Toshiba Application Installer" icon on the Windows desktop. This utility may also be launched by clicking Start -->All Programs --> Hard Disk Recovery Utilities.

    htd7c02140000r0136067.jpg

  2. Click "Next".
  3. Click the item(s) you wish to install. To select multiple items, hold down the Ctrl key as you click your selections.
  4. Click "Install".
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation process.

Hope this helps.

I'm facing major problem of active desktop recovery. Also I'm unable to restore my active desktop.

If all fails, then the last resort would be Reformat Your Computer. Save Everything. When you do a Reformat, all data is lost.
I found this on the web. You can click on the link to see it more in view.
http://www.ehow.com/how_5039946_reformat-windows-vista-computer.html
Step 1 ATTENTION!

Reformatting a computer will reset it to the factor image, all data must be backed up or it WILL be lost. There are several reasons to reformat a hard drive. A few reasons include but are not limited to: driver issues, virus, cleaning up, getting rid of the computer, etc.

Step 2 Recovery Disk Creator
Every new windows vista owner should know that the new computers are not supplied with recovery disks anymore. The manufacturer allows the user to create one set of disks upon the purchase of a new machine. It is important to create the disks early as driver issues and viruses may arise. In order to create recovery disks on windows vista you want to click on the start menu. Next, type in recovery in the Start Search option area. Next, click on recovery disk creation and follow the process. It will require that you have about 3 dvds or about 7 cds to create the recovery disks.
REFORMATING HARD DRIVE!

Once the recovery disks have been made reformatting windows vista is quite simple. Insert the recovery disks into the cd/dvd tray on the machine. You are now going to want to turn the computer off. When the computer has turned off, go ahead and turn it back on. A screen should pop up asking you whether you want to boot from Hard Drive or Disk. Choose the disk option. After you make it this far it is a downhill process. Next you follow the on-screen instruction make sure you reformat the machine, not recover it.

Good Luck :0)

Have lost the disc for my windows vista and need to reload

Some computers have part of the disk-drive allocated as a "recovery" partition -- just reboot your computer, select that partition, and you can reinstall Windows.

Some computers include software that lets you burn your own set of "recovery" CD/DVD disks. Run that software, if you can.

Since your computer was shipped with Vista, contact the manufacturer, and order a replacement set of "system recovery" CDs/DVDs.

Hi! My IBM R52 Notebook has gotten pretty slow. What shall do to get it quicker again and how can I formate the notebook! thanks for your valuabl advise in advance, rp

Try cleaning up your unused programs and files using disk cleanup and defragment your drive using disk defragmenter.
To formaer your drive and reinstall the OS, run the computers recovery wizard, or insert the recovery disk that came with your computer.
If you do not ahve a recovery disk or recovery program, use a windows installation disk like windows vista, windows XP DVD to format and reinstall the OS.
Make sure to backup the stuff you want before attempting this!

HOW TO FACTORY RESET TOSHIBA SATELLITE NOTEBOOK

That model Toshiba does not come with a recovery CD, does not have a restore partition, and does not allow you to creat a recovery disc when working normally, so unfortunatly you have 2 choices.

1. Call Toshiba and try to get them to mail you a recovery disk, if they have any they will likely charge you for the disk + shipping.

2. Reinstall windows manually using a clean install, you can use any OEM windows disk as long as it is the same version as your windows product key on the bottom of the laptop (i.e XP Home/XP PRO/ XP MCE/ or VISTA - all vista disks are basically the same and have all 3 versions on them)

Make sure you have backups of the drivers for your network adapter and other hardware before doing a clean install.
