Question about Toshiba TN43V71 43" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

I have a toshiba cinema series 57" rear projection television. It is about 7 years old and still works great with the exception of one problem. When playing a dvd the picture will not hold. It jumps around constantly and will not focus up. I have tried every input in the television with the same result. I have tried 3 different dvd players (they work fine on other tv's) and again with the same result. I am at a loss of what the problem could be. Thx. John

Yes. No issues with cable. Just dvd playback.

  • John Riggs Aug 26, 2010

Every aspect of tv works except for dvd playback. Cable works great.

Thank you.....I am not sure what you mean by an amplifier?

I have seen this problem before with some of the older sets and new players. I think an amplifier should resolve your issue. The problem is due to difference in the refresh rate.

I have a samsung dvd player, about 2 years old. The picture was fine using this very DVD player in days gone by. This problem started about 4 months ago.

Ok if it was working with the same tv a few years back then its not a problem with the refresh rate. Does it happen at lower resolutions too? Like if you are using 1080i then did you try 720p, 480p etc.,?

  • John Riggs Aug 26, 2010

Yes. I believe so. I just pop in the dvd and it won't hold the picture.

Eagle...One other thing I just noticed. When I remove the dvd from the player the picture is still jumping around. I have the tv set for dvd. The samsung logo of the dvd player is on the screen but the picture is still jumping around, vertical white lines are coming in and out as well.

If you have lines too then its a possible fault in the deflection circuit. Not sure if you want to try fixing a HV circuit unless you have prior experience in working on High Voltage electronic circuits.

  • John Riggs Aug 26, 2010

If that is the problem. Would it only be dvd related as the cable reception is fine?

    eagle338 Aug 26, 2010

You just said that its jumping around after the DVD player is removed?

  • John Riggs Aug 26, 2010

No. When the dvd disk is removed from the player. The dvd player is still plugged into the television. The picture is now the samsung logo of the dvd player and it is still jumping all over the place with the odd vertical white line popping in and out.

  • John Riggs Aug 26, 2010

I have even tried an XBOX 360 plugged into the front input jacks of the television. I put a dvd into the xbox and the same thing happens. Jumping around and so forth.

OK so you have not had this problem before and virtually every DVD player you connect causes jumpy picture right? If yes then you have a problem with v-hold of your set. The probable cause for this may be faulty electrolytic caps in the tuner circuit . Look for swollen/cracked/leaky capacitors and if you find any then replace them with those of the same values. It is unlikely to be deflection coz everything else seems to be fine. If there are none then let me know and I will see if I have a service manual for this model in my collection so we can start testing other components in the circuit.
Note that this repair requires skills of using a multimeter, soldering and most important of all know-how of what not to touch. If you do have them then I will be glad to see you through this.

Hi eagle...sorry for the delay. Work got in the way. I tried something else. My cable box works fine. So I disconnected the cable box and plugged the cables into my dvd player leaving the cables that are plugged into the television intact. Same problem. However when I take that same dvd player and play it on another set ,no problems occur. You spoke earlier of refresh rates etc. I am not sure how to change that on a dvd player etc. Thx. john

Never mind the refresh rate coz you daid the same player was working before. Please read my last comment.

The convergence IC's are probably bad. That manufactured year set should use two STK-392-110's. Also be aware that the low ohm resistors near the heat sink could also be bad or stressed. They would be discolored if stressed or bad. If you are not savvy with removing and replacing electronic components do not attempt repair. Call a professional.
Hope this helps,

Our tv is 10 years old toshiba cinema series it has blue and red

It will be 11 years next month that I've had my Toshiba 55H55 Cinema Series and have the same problem every now and then, if you haven't already done so, go to the picture settings and scrolling down to conversion and it will take you through 3 steps of adjustments, there is a white cross in the middle of the screen line up the red first and then the blue, it will then take you to a screen with numbers, ID the clearest number and exit out, you should have a clear picture again. I hope this helps.
