If you don't see the initial BIOS screen you could have a problem with one of the following.
A bad motherboard
Bad memory
In some cases a bad Hard drive
Remove the hard drive and memory (both typically removed from panels on the back. Try rebooting. If you get the HP BIOS screen then either the memory or hard drive is bad. Add each back in one at a time and reboot until you find the problem device and replace. I would also power on the computer and use a flash light on the screen. If you see a faint image of what you should normally see then you have a bad inverter. Lastly your motherboard is bad, not a lot you can do to test that.

If you get the boot image on your screen then you screen is working correctly unless there's something that you not explaining. You can try an ext. monitor if you think it is something related to your LCD screen not woring during boot up. If the ext monitor not showing your laptop to boot then you have problem with your OS and may need to get it repaired or restored.
Check the IDE from hard-disk and the connection with the motherboard. Normally, a pc must show a screen even if the hard disk is not detected. For some notebooks this is not the case. So, if the BIOS does't detect the hard disk the screen stays blak. The bottom of line: it could be a hard disk problem or the bad contact that conects with the hard disk on the motherboard.
