Question about Maytag Washing Machines

3 Answers

My Maytag washer is leaving clothes soaking wet at the end of the cycle. The fabric softener is also not dispensing. I just replaced the water pump due to the loud noise it was making but now I am having this issue. Any ideas to what this is?

The machine is spinning and the lid switch is working. All connections are good. What's next? Thanks for helping.

All connections are good. The lid switch is working properly and the machine is spinnging. What is your advice?

  • caitlin917 Aug 31, 2010

I have a top loading Maytag washer that is less than five years old. When the washer is done with it's cycle the clothes are soaking wet. I have checked the lid switch and made sure the washer is actually spining. Both are working. I just replaced the water pump two weeks ago. Also the fabric softener is not dispensing like it should. Any advice would be great. I need to wash clothes ASAP.

There is only one belt on my machine. It seems fine. Explain to me about the spin bearing.

No socks or clothing lodged in the pump or anywhere around the washer.

    Thanks for the advice.

Hi this sounds like a 2 belt top Loader Maytag. You did not provide a model number but given the preceeding assumption you have the pump belt way to tight so the motor pulley is pulled closer to the large tub drive pulley and is slipping more than it should. Look where the pump was mounted before you changed it. Generally It should not be more than 1/8 " from the original location. Most of the time it is the exact same spot. Move the pump closer to the motor and its' originally installed position. Check the spin each time you move the pump. closer to the motor. It is ok for the pump belt to appear slightly loose but not fall off the pulley. If you still have the same problem after doing the above please respond with the model number so we can get your washer back in service.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

This is from the service manual on what to check:

Will Not Spin/Spin Speed Too Slow

    • Check power supply to washer is between 108V to

132V with a load on the circuit.

    • Check for out of balance clothes load.

    • Check slow spin speed is not selected.

    • Check condition of drive belt.

    • Check drain system in the home is functioning properly.

    • Check for blocked or kinked drain hose.

    • Check for binding Tub Seal.

    • Check brake is disengaging properly.

    • Check motor slide and spring for proper movement.

    • Check between tubs for something contacting spinner.

    • Check for proper adjustment of the Thrust Bearing.

    • Check for broken impeller on Drain Pump, washer

should drain all water within 90 seconds.

    • When washer passes all checks place a one pound

unbalance weight in washer and check for 600 RPM. If

washer fails, check brake and cam adjustments.

Replace Transmission if brake and cam adjustments

    are ok.

You can download the service manual here:

    http://www.servicematters.com/maytag_lib...

A bit about the transmission operation from the manual

    Transmission Operation

When the Drive Pulley rotates CLOCKWISE, the upper

and lower cams are designed to nest together which

allows the Drive Pulley to remain in position on the drive

shaft. The Break remains engaged and the Drive Pulley

will turn the lower cam and drive the shaft to cause the

    Transmission to agitate.

When the Drive Pulley rotates COUNTERCLOCKWISE,

the upper cam and Pulley ride up the lower cam approximately

3/16 of an inch before the driving shoulders on the

Pulley hub engage the "dogs" on the lower cam.

This causes the top of the Pulley hub to push against the

Spacer which compresses the Brake Spring and lifts the

Brake Rotor and Lining assembly off the Brake Stator.

The Brake is disengaged and the Pulley will turn the

lower cam and drive shaft to cause the Transmission to

    spin
    .

Start reading on page 29 about checking the brake condition but, you need to check the brake disengagement on page 30 per the procedure listed there.

Note the reference to .032 thrust washers. This is a very important step. The thrust washers set the drive distance for the drive pulley to engage and disengage the brake. Improper distance will result in the brake not fully releasing and a slow spin.

    Thanks for choosing FixYa

Hi again. I just want to mention how important it is that the tub empties within 90 seconds. If if does not knowing you just changed the pump there can be something (piece if clothing sock etc) between the inner and outer tubs dragging on the wash tub acting like a brake or UNDER the inner tub and it is resting over the outer tub outlet drain hole to the pump inlet preventing the tub from emptying properly.

If this is a standard Maytag washer with a drive belt and pump belt and the machine is pumping out the water, the drive belt may need replacing because it is too loose and worn.
If the drive belt is OK,then the spin bearing on the transmission shaft needs replacing.
This is not an easy repair, but I can walk you through the steps.
Check the belt issue first and let me know what you find.

Have u checked to see if it is going into the spin cycle? best thing to do is remove the front cover and run your machine either that or run a jumper wire to your lid switch and jump the switch so you can see if your unit is spinning. write me back with the results of you checking if the machine is spinning
thank you

ok then do this take a flat head screw driver and activate the lid switch and watch the unit go into the spin cycle make sure the spin cycle activates on each setting of spin for instance if it works on normal then check on permenant press what were trying to do is assure that your spin cycle is actually working if it is not working then you would have to remove the cover of the machine and check the drive belt as well as the motor there located down the bottom front of the machine please write back on your observance of the spin cycle test what you found thanks again

    rickead1

p.s. do not set the unit on spin to start your test start your test on where you usually start your wash and this way you can see it go into the cycle also when you remove the cover to observe the belt and the motor look around the walls of the inside bottom and write back if there is any oil on the inside walls of your machine as well maytags are notorious for doing this and it is actually a major problem when they do thanks again

I own the Whirlpool duet set with the front loading washer. The clothes comeout with a bad smell. I was told that the washer probably needed to be cleaned. How is this done, and what makes it happen?

Using the wrong kind of detergent in your fancy front loader is a great way to grunge up your washer and impart some oder onto your clothes. And it accelerates the mechanical deterioration of your washer.
2. Using too much fabric softener and/or detergent.
Liquid fabric softener does not break down very well in cold water and the residue collects on the outer tub and basket along with the lint left from the wash. We professionals refer to this accumulated as grunge. Once formed, this grunge collects ever more additional soap, dirt, grease, human waste, mites, , parasites... and then some really bad stuff.
As it turns out, this grunge makes a perfect substrate for microbial life forms. Over some time- not very much time in warmer climates- those little bacterial colonies build up lots of microbial sewage, just like we do until one day you open the door to the washer
Using too much fabric softener will waterproof your clothes. How clean do you think your clothes will get if they repel water inside the washing machine?
3. Doing all your wash loads in cold water only.
Detergents don't dissolve as well in cold water. As a result, cold water washes leave behind more grunge. So... do an occasional wash in hot water. OK, maybe more than occasional. Like, I hope you at least wash your skivvies in hot water.
4. Leaving clothes in the washer at the end of the cycle.
Front loaders don't have as much access to open air as top load machines. Consequently, leaving clothes in the washer for more than eight hours will increase mold and mildew build up.
1. Add one additional gallon of hot water to the unit before sending it into a hot wash. This will raise the water level high enough to remove the Grunge Hiding Behind the Basket
2. Same as 1 but with bleach added to all dispensers. Clean the fabric softener cup with a rag first (bleach will not break up fabric softener since it is introduced in the rinse cycle with the fabric softener).
3. Same as1 and 2 but with a cap full of pine cleaner added to the wash water (NOT the dispenser). Add some old rags (they don`t need to be dirty) and select the extra rinse cycle. The wash action will help remove the accumulated grunge from the components
Once again, make sure you're only using high efficiency (HE) detergents in your front loader.

My spin cycle will not finish and I get a code F 03.

The problem with the fabric softener not dispensing is not likely related to and F03 error code due to the washer not draining.

For the dispenser problem, I recommend that you pull the dispenser drawer out and clean it thoroughly.
The fabric softener dispenser works on a siphoning principle.
Make sure that the siphon hole in the dispenser is clear and not restricted or plugged.

You can fill the fabric softener compartment with water and make sure that it is siphoning properly while you are cleaning it.
Make sure that the cover is properly replaced on the fabric softener dispenser when the drawer is replaced in the washer.
You can use the diagnostic test described below to test the fabric softener dispenser.
If the softener dispenser does not fill and dispense properly, you could have a failed dispenser valve, a failed control board or a wiring failure between components.

You indicated that you tested the pump and that it is good. You could have a clogged drain hose or a clogged washer drain that would prevent the washer from draining.
You could also have a failed drain pump even though it runs. If the impeller is jammed or damaged, it will not pump out the water in the washer.
You will likely need to unplug the washer and drain the water out of the tub using a wet/dry shop vacuum.
To check the pump and drain hose at the bottom of the washer, remove the bottom front service panel and remove the drain pump. You may find a clog or restriction in the drain pump or connecting hoses. If the drain pump is damaged or will not work, it will need to be replaced.

Maytag a112 manual on how to add bleach AND fabric softener

Hi
Choosing Your Detergent, Bleach, and Fabric Softener..
Learn what the different items you need to wash your laundry.
Liquid Laundry Detergent and Fabric Softeners
When using liquid laundry detergent, you do not want to poor it directly on your laundry. The dyes in the liquid laundry soap could stain your clothing. You will want to start your washing machine and add the liquid laundry soap while the water is filling the washing machine.
You then can add your laundry once you have about and eighth of the washing machine tub filled. This will ensure your laundry doesn't become stained by the detergent. You should only add the amount that is poured into the cup to the fill line. When you add more, you could find yourself wading through mounds of bubbles overflowing from your washing machine.
The same reasoning applies to liquid fabric softeners. However, liquid fabric softeners are added to the washing cycle after the initial washing cycle is finished. You will want to add the fabric softener once the washing machine has filled with water and started to agitate. This keeps the fabric softener from touching the laundry and will work it into your clothing better.
Powdered Laundry Detergent
You will want to add one cup of loose laundry detergent to your washing machine in the same manner you would do the liquid laundry detergent. By doing this, the powdered laundry detergent will dissolve easier.
Bleach
When adding bleach to your laundry, there is a small triangular cup in the corner of your washing machine. By adding one cup of bleach into that dispenser, the bleach will be added to the laundry at a precise time during the wash cycle.
Setting Your Washing Machine
Most washing machines have three or four cycles. For instance, the Maytag Washer I have has four cycles, regular, permanent press, delicate, and soak.
Regular Washing Cycle
The regular cycle is used for the following types of clothes and other apparel:
• Jeans
• Towels
• Blankets
• Sheets
• Quilts
• Bedspreads
The soil types for this cycle are heavy, normal, and light. This means clothes or other articles that are lightly too heavily soiled should be washed in this cycle. This is due to the washing cycles can be set from a minimum of eight to fourteen minutes maximum. You can use all three of the water temperatures in this cycle.
1Permanent Press Washing Cycle
The permanent press washing cycle is used on the clothes that may or may not need to be ironed.
Such as:
• Blouses
• Shirts
• T-shirts
• Under garments. This would be your unmentionables and socks.
• Jackets
• Sheets
• Baby Clothing
The soil types for this wash cycle are normal and light. The washing times for the permanent press cycle are six minutes to ten minutes. You can use all three washing temperature modes for this cycle as well.
Delicate Washing Cycle
The delicate washing cycle is normally used for sweaters, cotton, silks, and other fabrics that need to be washed with care.
The soil types for the delicate cycle are normal and light. The washing times for the delicate cycle are four and six minutes. It is best to wash your delicate clothes in warm or cold water. Always wash clothing that is more than forty percent cotton in cold water to prevent shrinking.
Soak Washing Cycle
The soak cycle would be used for heavily soiled clothing, such as, football and baseball uniforms. This will help rid the uniforms of caked on mud and grass stains.
You can also use this cycle if you wish to only bleach your white's once a week or once a month with bleach.
Washing Your Laundry
Choose the cycle you need for your laundry. Add the laundry detergent, fabric softener, and bleach (remember regular liquid bleach is for white clothes only.) Start the washing machine and let fill to dissolve the dry detergent or to mix in the liquid detergent.
Now add your clothes to the washing machine. Clothes the lid so the washing machine will continue to wash your clothes.
If you are using a Laundromat, put your clothes in the washing area and shut the lid or door. Add your detergent and other cleaning items in the correct compartments. Put in the correct amount of change so the washer will start.

Can I use color safe bleach in my new cabrio, and if so where do I put it?

According to the manual on pages 12 & 13.

1.
Place a load of sorted clothes into the washer. See “Laundry
Tips.”
■ Load evenly to maintain washer balance. Mix large and
small items. Items should move easily through the wash
water.
■ Load only to the top of the basket as shown. Overloading
can cause poor cleaning. Items need to move easily
through the wash water.
2. Pour measured powdered or liquid High Efficiency detergent
into the detergent dispenser. Always use the detergent
dispenser, and do not put detergent directly onto clothes in
the washer.
3. Add color-safe bleach (powdered or liquid) to this dispenser,
if needed. Be sure to match powdered color-safe bleach with
powdered detergent or match liquid color-safe bleach with
liquid detergent.
4. Pour measured liquid chlorine bleach into the liquid chlorine
bleach dispenser, if needed. Bleach is diluted and
automatically dispensed at the proper time during the wash
cycle.
■ Do not overfill. Do not dilute. Do not use more than 1 cup
(250 mL) for a full load. Use less with a smaller load size.
■ Follow the garment and the chlorine bleach
manufacturer’s directions for proper use.
■ To avoid spilling, use a cup with a pouring spout. Do not
let bleach splash, drip, or run down into the washer basket.
■ At the end of the cycle, a small amount of water may be
left in the dispenser. This is normal.
NOTE: Use only liquid chlorine bleach in this dispenser.

5. Pour measured liquid fabric softener into the fabric softener
dispenser, if desired.
■ Do not overfill. The dispenser holds 3 oz (94 mL), or a
capful of fabric softener.
■ The fabric softener is dispensed in the final rinse. If Extra
Rinse is selected, the fabric softener will be dispensed
during the Extra Rinse.
■ Do not spill or drip any fabric softener onto the clothes.
■ At the end of the cycle, a small amount of water may be
left in the dispenser. This is normal.
NOTE: Use only liquid fabric softener in this dispenser.
6. Close the washer lid.
7. Press POWER. This turns on the washer display.
8. Select a Wash Cycle. See “Cycles.”
9. Select the desired Modifiers. See “Modifiers.”
10. Select an Option, if desired. See “Options.”
11. Select Delay Wash, if desired. See “Delay Wash” in the
“Modifiers” section.
12. Press START. The wash cycle begins, and the display shows
the estimated remaining time. The lid will lock.
NOTE: If you do not press Start within 5 minutes of pressing
Power, the washer automatically shuts off.

The way that I read the manual, your color safe bleach would go in the detergent dispenser. Your liquid chlorine bleach would go in the bleach dispenser.

Water Softner Dispense wont empty - Kenmore Elite Quiet Pak 4 HE3t

I'm sure you heard a small motor running from time to time during a cycle. That moves an "arm" which sends water to the different chambers during a cycle. Fabric softener is dispensed when water goes to that chamber and dilutes the fabric softener. That chamber then empties by a siphoning action.
If you want to narrow down the problem a little to help trouble shoot -- put some wet rags in and run the Rinse and Spin cycle with some fabric softener. If the softener is not dispensed, then you know that the water isn't being sent to that chamber properly.
If you are intrepid enough to take the top off your washer, do that and see if the arm appears to be moving during a normal cycle. Maybe the arm got dislodged or broken during the move.
If water isn't being diverted properly, I think this calls for a real repair person.
