The battery compartment is opened by moving down the latch in the same compartment.
Now, I ask you to explain to me how works the flash National PE 3550 in automatic mode. Thanks.

How to tell iff batteries are uselss or need replacing or charger or drill itself

The first thing to do is get your volt meter and check if there is any voltage coming from the battery and compare that to what it is stopped to be. If the voltage is ok, install the battery in the drill and try to run it. If it won't run, you've got a bad drill. Next install the battery in the charger and plug the charger into your wall outlet. There should be an LED which flashes to indicate that it is charging. If you can get a full charge on the battery (verify this with your volt meter), try it in the dill again. If the drill will not rotate, there is definitely a problem with the drill.

I now have a Nikon D80. I have a National Flashgun Model PE300SWG Can you advise me if this 'gun is safe to use with the D80?Nikon tell me that as long as the trigger flash voltage is o--250volts it is...

A flash trigger voltage in the 250V range is fine for most film cameras, but not for most digital cameras. The PE-300 has a trigger voltage in the 33V range, which I (and most others) would consider much too high for the D80.
BTW, "National" is a brand name used by Panasonic.

Hi I've just aquired a monster PE-3550 from an attic sale Will this work on modern day dig slr's ? I have a nikon D80 & a D300 thanks Phil email

The National/Panasonic PE-3550 has a trigger voltage of 32V. The 1992 ISO standard states cameras should be able to handle up to 24V. Some people within Nikon claim their cameras can only handle up to 12V. Either way, I wouldn't use a PE-3550 with a Nikon dSLR.

At least not directly. You can use something like a Wein Safe-Sync to isolate the two.
