If the weather outside is cold and you are running the heatpump/aircondition. Is the fan motor on the outside suppose to stop running. I notice the there is heat coming from the unit after it as been...

yes the fan will shut down during the defrost cycle. But the fan only shuts down during this cycle....other than defrost the outdoor fan motor should be running during a call for heat.

Maytag Atlantis shut down during rinse cycle.

Contacted a local repair shop. They told me that if I got it spinning again, the motor was most likely ok. It is protected by a thermal switch that turns it off when it begins to overheat. The smell was to be expected as it was overheating; the difficutly restarting was because it hadn't cooled off enough yet. We have now used it a few times for small loads. Still getting a smell, but the wash cycle is completing ok.

Maytag PYET244AYW Electric dryer

could be an overheated motor, but always clean venting and make sure it is under 20' with fewer than 4 elbows. mat'l should be metal. filter housing sometimes get clogged also, look inside and remove any lint build-up. there should be very strong flow of air out vent with hose removed.
