The drum is located in front of the ink cartridges and has a handle that you pull up and out of the printer.

Are the Q3971A and the Q3964A imaging drums interchangeable?

Q3971A is a colour toner cartridge. Q3964A is an actual toner/drum, not toner alone. So, no, they are not interchangeable as they provide completely different functions.

MY HP LaserJet 2840 has a brand new Toner cartridge. Now it won't print at all and we are getting a "OPC at end of life" prompt. What does this mean?

Imaging drum reach 20,000 (black only) or 5,000 (color), replace the image drum.

Supplies life
The life of the imaging drum depends on the number of black-only or color pages that print jobs
require. Imaging-drum life is also affected each time the device calibrates because calibrating causes the imaging drum to rotate. Imaging-drum life is measured in terms of number of rotations rather than number of pages printed.
The type and length of print jobs also affects drum life. A series of short print jobs uses more drum
life than an equivalent number of pages printed in a single large job. To extend drum life, print
multiple copies of a print job at one time rather than sending the same job to the device multiple times.
The life of a print cartridge depends on the amount of toner that print jobs require. When printing text at 5% coverage, black print cartridges last an average of 5,000 pages and cyan, magenta, and
yellow print cartridges last an average of 2,000 pages. High-capacity cyan, magenta, and yellow print cartridges last an average of 4,000 pages. (A typical business letter has 5% coverage.)

We have an HP Color Laserjet 2840 printer in our office. We were low on our black ink drum, bought a new drum and installed it. Copies are coming out perfectly but the "replace black...

The 2840 is a slightly different sort of machine when it comes to supplies. There is a main imaging drum unit which works for all four colors, and then there of course are the 4 colors. If the unit was asking for a drum unit then you should have instaled a Q3964A. It is entirely possible that your drum unit and black cartridge both expired at the same time, in which case, you need a black toner cartridge now.

The HP Color Laserjet 2840 Is a Very Good Reliable Printer. I'm curious if you are buying American made components or cheap components from some thrid world country sold at ahuge retailer. Image drum light is on and printer will not print

You will need to replace the image drum assembly. If it's a 2550 then the part number should be Q3964A . Once you replace this the counter automatically resets and the printer will be back and working

HP 2840, black ink drum q3964a

Hello, these printers tend to be finicky.

In other words, just replace the black toner. When the printer says its low, or empty, regardless of wether or not it is, just replace it.

Replacing the drum, when it says black toner needs to be replaced will do nothing to rectify the issue.

Buy only HP Toner and Drum cartridges for this printer. Do not try to refill toner cartridges, and do not reset drum. You will only end up destroying your printer in the process.
