If the loud sound is a beep like ..and the actual boot do not occur..not even the devices being listed ....the problem is with the ram memory ..The action to be done ..is to remove the ram memory ...and if there are more than one ..just try them one at the time ..to see which one is to blame ..
If there is only one ram memory unit in the laptop..than remove it ...and insert it back ..firmly without touching the modules..
here you have an example of how they are placed..and how to handle them ..
http://www.helpwithpcs.com/upgrading/install-laptop-memory.htm
if after removing one of them the other works ..and the laptop boot up...shut it down and try to insert the other too..cause sometimes the issue is just from poor connection ..or the slot need to be cleaned..
I hope you will understand the answer..anyway I will try to attach an approximate translation in German ..
The idea is to remove the ram memory ..clean the slots..and put them back one by one ..and try to boot to see if one of them is defective ..
If there is only one ..and is defective ..you will need to replace ..if will not work after the replacing operation ..

Ibm thinpad t40 is locked unable to open

HI............
Reset IBM ThinkPad Password
An IBM ThinkPad laptop can have three hardware password sets:
  • Power-On Password
  • Hard Disk Password
  • Supervisor Password
Power-On Password RT/CMOS RAM has 8 bytes reserved for the power-on password and the check character. The 8 bytes are initialized to hex 00. The microprocessor can access these bytes only during POST. After POST is completed, if a power-on password is installed, the password bytes are locked and no program can access them.
During power-on password installation, the password (1 to 7 characters) is stored in the security space.
Installing the password is a function of the built-in system program Easy-Setup. The power-on password does not appear on the screen when it is installed, changed, or removed. After the power-on password has been installed, it can be changed or removed only during POST.
Hard Disk Password The hard-disk password (HDP) prevents unauthorized persons from accessing the data on the removable hard disk drive.
Supervisor Password The supervisor password prevents unauthorized persons from changing the system information in Easy-Setup.
thinkpad.png How to Reset an IBM ThinkPad Power On Password using Software If the user can boot the IBM ThinkPad, KeyMaker will recover the BIOS password.
How to Reset an IBM ThinkPad Power On Password Using Hardware If the ThinkPad cannot be booted, reset the IBM ThinkPad password via hardware.
If only the power-on password is set, do the following to remove the power-on password.
  1. Power off the computer
  2. Remove the DIMM cover on the bottom side of the computer.
  3. Short circuit the two password pads or put a jumper on the contacts to short the circuit.
  4. Under the short circuit condition, power on the computer and wait until the POST ends. After the POST ends, the password prompt does not appear. The power-on password is removed.
  5. Reinstall the DIMM cover.
If both the power-on password and the supervisor password are set, do the following to remove the passwords:
  1. Press and hold F1 to power on the computer.
  2. Enter the supervisor password. The Easy-Setup menu appears.
  3. Click the Password icon.
  4. Click the Power on icon.
  5. Enter the supervisor password and press the Space bar.
  6. Press Enter twice.
  7. Click Exit then click Restart.

GOOD LUCK......

I power the device on and get the 'IBM ThinkPad' logo screen. Nothing happens after that

Since you are getting the IBM Thinkpad Logo it is confirmed that you have no hardware error. All you need to do is restore the operating system. most of the IBM laptop has an inbuilt recovery option. just press the access IBM/ Thinkvantage (blue button) immediately after pressing the power button and follow the screen..

hope this helps.

I have ibm G41 laptop i formatted my inbuilt os ...but i have to access that os and ibm access menu again recovery space is still in my harddisk but i cant access ibm acceess menu ...

Hi, During the boot at the THINKPAD SCREEN press the Thinkvantage key ( Blue button ) it will launch rescue and recovery and allow you to reboot factory. This only works if you did not corrupted/deleted the rescue and recovery hidden partition on the HDD. Otherwise you will need the rescue and recovery CD to proceed. IBM/Lenovo support should be able to provide you the CD. thanks and have a nice day J-

My ibm thinkpad r-52 is locked with bios password.how can i remove that .i dont know the password.plz help me mohitagrawal08@gmail.com

Please note that Thinkpad stores the password in a special security chip which is accessed during boot time.

The only option I know to reset BIOS password in a Thinkpad is to disassemble the system and then use the steps mentioned in the following link

Dont have password

There are two sections (that come to mind) when a password is requested in starting a computer. BIOS or Windows Passwords.
WINDOWS PASSWORD This will be after the windows logo as come up. Depending on which version of windows you have, you will need to find a windows password reset tool.
A lot of these will require you to boot from a CD that you have created from an ISO image. If this is is confusing, head into a computer shop and ask them to do it.  Alternatively, reformatting the machine by reinstalling windows over the top should eliminate the problem (and all of the data that is still on the machine.)
BIOS PASSWORD This will usually be during the 'black screen' phase of booting.
An IBM ThinkPad laptop can have three BIOS hardware passwords set
  • Power-On Password
  • Hard Disk Password
  • Supervisor Password

Power-On Password
RT/CMOS RAM has 8 bytes reserved for the power-on password and the check character. The 8 bytes are initialized to hex 00. The microprocessor can access these bytes only during POST. The power-on password does not appear on the screen when it is installed, changed, or removed. After the power-on password has been installed, it can be changed or removed only during POST.
Hard Disk Password
The hard-disk password (HDP) protects the data on your removable hard disk drive from being accessed by unauthorized persons.
Supervisor Password
The supervisor password protects the system information in Easy-Setup from being changed by unauthorized persons.
How to Reset an IBM ThinkPad Power On Password using Software If you can boot the IBM ThinkPad, KeyMaker will recover the BIOS password.
How to Reset an IBM ThinkPad Power On Password Using Hardware If you cannot boot the ThinkPad, you will have to reset the IBM ThinkPad password via hardware. If only the power-on password is set, do the following to remove the power-on password. Power off the computer Remove the DIMM (Memory) cover on the bottom side of the computer. Short-circuit the two password pads or put a jumper on the contacts to short the circuit. Under the short-circuit condition, power on the computer and wait until the POST ends. After the POST ends, the password prompt does not appear. The power-on password is removed. Reinstall the DIMM cover.
If both the power-on password and the supervisor password are set, do the following to remove the passwords: Power on the computer by pressing and holding F1. Enter the supervisor password. The Easy-Setup menu appears. Click on the Password icon. Click on the Power on icon. Enter the supervisor password and press the Space bar. Press Enter twice. Click on Exit; then click on Restart.

Access IBM buttom does not function

this will occur if you have installed a clean copy of windows i.e not the one supplied by IBM and/or you have uninstalled the access IBM software (or it isn't installed in the first place) . You can get the access ibm software at the manufacturers website. The ACCESS IBM button will not function during boot up if you have removed the access ibm rescue and recovery partition. It can also be activated/deactivated from the BIOS. ( Press F11 or F1 0 during boot up )

IBM ThinkPad T20

Wow, a lot of information but I'm unclear as to what you are trying to do.

Are you connecting the T20 directly to the T40 using a cat5 cable and then trying to access the internet on the T20 via the modem?

Connecting the two computer together using a normal cat5 will not work, you need to use a crossover cable otherwise you are connecting the send to the send and the receive to the receive.
You can also use a hub, a switch or a router if you have any of those on hand.

As for the modem, I suggest you unplug the telephone line from the modem and plug it into a phone and see if you can hear a dial tone. If you cannot hear a tone either the extension is bad (replace) or you outlet is defective. If you can hear a tone, the modem card may be defective.
