Will hurt the washer if I don't use HE detergents

no, but your clothes won't clean as well. HE detergents use less detergent and work in cold or cool water washes. They are more expensive, but they go further and save you money in electricity. Normal powders may not fully dissolve.

Water leaking out of detergent dispenser

As you said in the question you just need to check the following things.
*Pull out the tray fully and lift it upwards to remove the detergent holder.
*Clean the dispenser housing and drawer with water if you find any traces of detergent in it.
*Reassemble the tray and push it back to its position.(flush with top).
After checking this you are washing machine will be fine. Thanks for your question.

The soap tray fills with water at the back conditioner section on every run (no matter which programme) and does not drain, so I have to manually remove it and empty it after every load. I also think this...

Remove the detergent drawer by pulling it out and then pressing down the yellow part on the back of the drawer. Clean the drawer fully by hand in a washing up bowl using a mild detergent. Detach the yellow part from the grey part by turning it upside down and push in the clips gently. Clean the yellow part thoroughly. Put the yellow part back on - it just clicks back in place, and push your detergent drawer back in. Do an empty cotton wash at 85C (with no washing powder) to sanitise your machine.

Error message sd

Sorry to read about your problem, I hope this helps you out.

"Sd" fault code in the image below. The "Sd" usually displays when too much detergent is used or the wrong type of detergent is used. High Efficient (HE) detergent is recommended. You clothes may have detergent in them that has not fully rinsed out and when you wash them the added detergent causes over sudsing.

I recommend washing the type of loads that generally causes the "Sd" to display without adding any detergent to see if it develops suds.

Which is better a top loader or front loader washing machine?

Front Loading Washing Machine: Fully automatic.
1. Better washing than toploading as technologically proofed.
2. No extra effort except putting cloths and detergent inside.
3. No need to observe in between while washing. Start and forgot. You can go market and come back.
4. No issue if electricity or water went out during washing.
4. Take more water compare to toploading semi-automatic.
5. You can not open it once it started.

Top Loading Washing Machine: Semi
1. Save water and detergent.
2. Need extra effort to put the cloth from one box to another.

Heavy towels don't come clean & smell of mildew - all whites and colours are gray after bleach has been used.

Did you add detergent to the dispenser?
For best results, add detergent to the detergent
compartment. Do not add detergent to the washer drum.
 Did you sort properly?
Sort lint givers (towels, chenille) from lint takers (corduroy,
synthetics). Dye transfer can occur when mixing whites and
colors in a load. Sort dark clothes from whites and lights.
 Did you overload the washer?
Do not overload the washer. The washer can be fully loaded,
but not tightly packed. The wash load must be balanced. Lint
can be trapped in the load if overloaded.
 Check the following:
Was paper or tissue left in pockets?
Did you use enough HE detergent?
Follow manufacturer’s recommendations for the type of load
you are washing. For best performance, use only High
Efficiency detergent. Use enough HE detergent to remove soil
and hold it in suspension.
 Do you have hard water?
Use more detergent for washing heavy soils in cold or hard
water.
Is your water colder than 60°F (15.6°C)?
Wash water colder than 60°F (15.6°C) may not completely
dissolve the detergent. Use hot or warm washes if safe for the
fabric load. Make sure your hot water system is adequate to
provide a hot water wash.
Have you run the Clean Washer Cycle lately?
To freshen your washer and to avoid odors, see “Cleaning
Your Washer.”
 Are you using HE detergent?
Use of non-HE detergent can cause a film residue which can
result in odor.
Did you leave the door open after use?
This washer has a tight seal to avoid water leaks. To avoid
odors leave the door open to allow the washer to dry
between uses.

The washing detergent is not released

Hi, I have this same unit and the same thing would happen to me too. I discovered that it was my dishes that were getting in the way of the detergent door. I'm sure you're are, but make sure that all your plates/bowls, etc, are pushed far enough back that they don't interfere with the poorly placed detergent door.
