SOURCE: removing the pin on a starter assembly to replace bendix

Push down on the bendix fairly hard and it will move down against spring pressure to reveal a small clip you must remove with a small screwdriver.

SOURCE: my 1949 8N Ford tractor, the starter just spins

My thought is you need a new "bendix" for lack of a better word. The device I speak of spins out and connects with the flywheel. There is the possibility you have electric problems but based on what you say, I think it is mechanical.

SOURCE: How do I remove the starter on a Ford 8N tractor?

Funny you should ask. I just got in from doing just that.

1: Disconnect the battery
2: remove the seloniod (I just unbolted and unscrewed it from the starter and left the wires on it so I wasn't trying to guess what went where later when I get back to reassembling it.)
3: you have 2 bolts at the rear of the starter (the part of the starter that faces the front of the tractor.) You unscrew them to take the starter out. BE CAREFUL - if you pull the starter apart it will be a bear to get the brushes back in.

I had the additional problem of the "bendix" (the part that engages the flywheel) jumping over the flywheel so I needed to remove the bolts on the canister to the left of the starter and move it slightly out of place in order to complete the project. You may not have to do that but I mention it as a aid because I don't know why you're changing out starters.

In my case I found that although the starter was spinning the shaft was being chewed up because the engager (bendex - whatever its called) had jumped the flywheel and was resting against the flywheel. Really needed extra space to pull the starter because of that.

Also saw somewhere that that bendix needs to be drawn in in order to reinsert the starter (something about having to spin it in??? I'll be looking for that shortly myself.

The bendex in stuck to the flywheel on my 8n

I have the same problem as Derek. I pulled the casing off the starter and the armature along with the Bendix stayed stuck in the bell housing. I tried tried putting the tractor in gear and rocking it back and forth with hopes that the bendix would pul away from the flywheel. No luck. I think I'm going to have to pull the thing apart.

How does starter drive work

Controlled by Solenoid
  • A car starter is responsible for turning over, or starting, a vehicle engine. Located on the underside of most cars, the starter is controlled by the solenoid, which is a small attachment directly on top of the starter itself or in the engine compartment. The solenoid, which receives electricity from the car battery, is responsible for engaging and disengaging the starter .

New starter motor and bendix. will not engage with flyweel. starter motor just spins.

Starter motor spins, but does not engage
    1. Check the starter motor for a seized or binding pinion gear.
    2. Remove the flywheel inspection plate and check for a damaged ring gear.

Starter spins but does not seem to engage to fly wheel

Odds are that you have a broken spring in the bendix part of the starter drive, which is replaceable but at the same time is hard to find separate from the whole assembly. The whole assembly will run you about 55 to 90 dollars depending on where you find it.

Replaced starter and sylenoid - but engine won't always turn

sounds like the bendix spring is bad on the starter (it's the spring that returns the gear to it not moving state)...good luck

Need to replace 9n tractor starter when you turn ignition key the starter just keeps going around.

I suggest that you pull the starter and make sure the bendix unit isn't stuck on the shaft which may be rusted or dirty and corroded first. If the starter spins then the starter itself is probably okay. Hope this helps you

Ford 4000 starter only works when I hit it with a hammer. What does that indicate?

the bendix unit on the starter shaft is sticking. You need to pull the starter and clean the shaft up and lightly grease it so the gear can move out when you engage the starter. worst case scenario you may have a badly worn shaft and need to replace it with a new starter. hope this helps you...
