If it has oil and is not pumping it, then it is probably blocked by a wood chip that fell in to the oil when you opened the cap.
You need to blow it out with air, backwards.

I have a1640 partner and the oiler pump does not pump out oil when in use. I cleaned the saw and I have lost the cap which fits on the end of the plunger of the oil pump

Hi allanpriest...

Forget the auto oiler...use a handheld oil gun to lube the chain on your saw...just lube the chain approx. every 2 - 4 minutes of use

Your response about the electric chain saw that must be oiled manually was about a self-oiling chain saw so it did not answer my question. How to oil the saw? Use an oil can to spread the oild across the...

Your chain saw is a manually oiled model which means YOU have to pump it.YOU do not pour oil on the chain. An auto oiler model works without you doing anything, the pump is run by the engine. A manual model, you pump the oiler The Chain saw has internal oil channels or holes to apply the oil directly under the chain and into the chain bar guide. Pouring oil on the guide or chain will NEVER lubricate the chain properly. Whomever gave you such an idea is just plain wrong. I sent you the link to the owner manual and gave you a diagram. The automatic chain oiler does not get oil to the chain. Yes, it has chain oil. The black tube to the top chamber at the bar, seems to be plugged and I cant get it off to clean it out. Thanks, Steve

I have never seen an automatic chain oiler that worked. Even new ones don't seem to work. Just pour a little used engine oil on the bar once in awhile like everyone else does.
In theory there is a small piston that rubs on an eccentric at the chain sprocket, and that sucks in oil and pushes it through a hole, into the center groove of the bar.
But if the piston is dry, it won't pump.
If the holes are clogged with sawdust, it won't work.
Here is a video that may help:

Chain oiler does not seem to be putting out enough oil, what can i do to increase the flow?

This model does not have an adjustable oiler. If the ports are clean and the pickup is clean, you may need to replace the pump. This is generally an inexpensive repair.

Poulan oiler don't work

Common problem with Poulan and Craftsman gas saws. Take off the chain and chain guide and clean out all the saw dust etc. Start saw without chain and look for port where there are signs of oil. If port is clear of sawdust, then it is likely the pump which is located behind the chain break assembly. you can get the diagram on Poulan website and the replacement pump will cost about $15 - $20 to replace yours.

Have a MAC 3818 chain saw it just stopped oiling.

Same for me. Take chain off and ensure clean oil hole and channel. Clean hole if needed with fine wire or heavy nylon line. otherwise I think problem is interior, either oiler itself or oiler oil tube came loose. Since I have no excess oil coming out I suppose oiler iself is bad.Still working on it.

After these bikes have set for a period of time the oil in the oil tank drains to the lower end of the engine and when started after sitting the oil is usually forced out of the vents for crankcase; which on many of these bikes is through the primary and possibly to the chain oiler etc. Usually after running for a few minutes the oil is back in the oil tank and over supply to the oiler stops! Could possibly soak the clutch plates if it filled primary case also. Be sure and check oil level in tank?! If you added oil before starting it will now be overfilled after starting. This is common problem and will mend it self usually. Does make a mess in the garage toooooooo! Jesse "Leroy" Graves
