The most common failure of a watch to be water resistant is caused by a faulty contact between the case at an opening around the glass, crown, or pushbutton and the opening's gasket. Worn or defective rubber O-rings are often a cause of failure. Condensation forming under the crystal of a watch following a sharp temperature change (a swim after a stretch in the sun, for example) tells you to have the watch checked without delay. This can be an indication of additional moisture elsewhere inside the case. It is also the only water-tightness check a consumer can perform.
Of course non-water-resistant watches don't contain the additional seals and gaskets found on water-resistant models. Consequently, moisture-laden air can easily enter the case. Once inside, a pronounced change in temperature may cause condensation to form under the crystal. Very little can be done to prevent this. A high-quality water-resistant watch, however, properly serviced and maintained, will be sealed to prevent internal water damage and will more than outlast an ordinary watch.
To keep the watch properly sealed, replace any defective parts , such as gaskets, crystals, and crowns. Water-resistant watches should be tested for case tightness at least once a year, as well as every time the watch is opened, such as when a battery is replaced.

Battery for relic wet or 15478 and how to remove back of watch

Watch back will almost certainly need a dedicated wrench to loosen and unscrew it. Sometimes considerable force is needed and in that case a watch repairer would remove the strap and fit the watch into a bench-mounted holder.

Once the back has been disturbed the water resistance cannot be guaranteed unless it is pressure tested after refitting.

How to change the battery. I can't get the back off to get to it.

You need to take the watch to a watch expert. Most watches are not designed to be serviced by the owner. There are a couple of national chains of watch repair stores that specialize in battery replacement as well as a vanishing number of full-service watch repair shops. Most jewelers are not trained nor do they have the tools to do a proper battery replacement. Since this is a water resistant watch, make sure the place you take it to can re-seal the back and pressure test it to ensure the water resistance. The best place I've found is Precision Time. They are located in most major cities in major shopping malls and can service the watch while you shop. Check out www.precisiontimeco.com for nearest location. There are also a lot of FastFix locations around, but most are not able to reseal the watches.

Can I swim laps w/ my ebel 30 meter watch? The watch has 4 screws on the back and the crown does not screw down.

Thank you for contacting FixYa.
Water Resistant is a common mark stamped on the back of wrist watches to indicate how well a watch is sealed against ingress of water. It is usually accompanied by an indication of the static test pressure that a sample of newly manufactured watches was exposed to in a leakage test. The test pressure can be indicated either directly in bars, or (more commonly) as an equivalent water depth in meters (in the United States sometimes also in feet).
An indication of the test pressure in terms of water depth does not mean a water resistant watch was designed for repeated long term use in such water depths. For example, a water resistant watch marked at 30 meters depth cannot be expected to withstand activity for longer time periods in a swimming pool, let alone continue to function at 30 meters under water. This is because the test is conducted only once using static pressure on some of the newly manufactured watches. The test for qualifying a diving watch for repeated usage in a given depth includes safety margins to take factors in account like aging of the seals, rapidly changing water pressure and temperature, as well as dynamic mechanical stresses encountered by a watch. Also every diving watch has to be fully tested for water resistance.
Hope this helps.

Relic model zr66023 165 ft under water watch. how do you light the light to see numbers. 2 buttons on side, buttons on side push in but no light

This particular watch has no light. The two additional buttons are for the chronograph (timer) function. The top is the stop/start button, and the bottom is the reset button. Source: I own this model of watch and have the book on it as well.

I have a fossil watch model fs4255 leather strap dress amber dial and I want to open back to remove old battery and replace with a new. i have a watch repair tool kit and replace all my own watch batteries...

mcdevito75 here, Even with the proper tools we still have to improvise at times, Instead of useing your case opener from your tool kit, use a steak knife or similar with a sharp edge inside that groove you"ve described, the cover will pry off.

Armitron wr165 ladies watch

WR 165 simply means Water Resistant to 165 feet. The model of your watch is stamped on the back of the watch face.

Check out this website for possible instructions, and at least they can sort of help you get started....

Rhinestone fell out

No, this will not be covered on the warranty. You have to visit your nearest watch repair shop or jeweller and ask to fit a new stone. It is easy job and shouldn't cost too much.

How to set the time on relic watches

I had to go to the Sears counter to fix mine. The sales person had to use TWEEZERS to pull the serrated knob up. He had to really work at it. Once it is pulled up you can twist the knob to set the time and then push the knob back down. What a stupid design.
