Question about Sony VAIO PCG-K23 Notebook

1 Answer

My Sony Vaio PCG-K23's LCD screen shows thin red, green & blue streaks running vertically. When I hook up an external monitor, it's still streaky, but I can make out the icons and see the mouse pointer. What's the problem here? Is it the harness that runs thru the hinges or is it the video driver? I tried adjusting the hinges, to different angles, to see if there was any change, but none was noted.

SInce the same problem appears on the external monitor, you have a failing video card/controller chip on the motherboard. Had the problem been absent from the external monitor you would merely need to replace the LCD panel and the Screen Inverter.

Your next move will of necessity be to count the cost of a motherboard repair service where (1) they fix the board at the individual coponent level, (2) you replace the entire motherboard or (3), your laptop has a discrete (not soldered to the board) video card which can be replaced.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this is a serious hardware problem and not a simple driver update.

Good Luck

What exactly are you using as the external monitor? Is it just a normal LCD monitor, CRT monitor or LCD tv/Plasma tv? Also get me the make and model of the same.

Please provide this info so that I can help you with your problem.

Sony Vaio PCG-K23 LCD Monitor will work with Ubuntu or at c:prompt but the instant Windows loads it goes black. I've uninstalled, fdisked, reinstalled and so on what seems to be 100 times to no avail. I...

hook the laptop back up to the external monitor, once it boots and has settled, I would like you to hold down the Fn key which should be at the lower left of the keyboard and tap the F7 key. This will toggle the video output from external to internal or both at the same time. I have never heard of an issue where Ubuntu will allow a video signal, but now windows. I hope this works for you.

Sony vaio laptop PCG-5J2L montior is black can still see the screen a little bit how to get the screen back????

you pretty much cant.. the light bulb on the actual screen is now dead. If you plug an external monitor to this machine you can still use as a desktop.

Lines on screen

The cable that plugs your monitor into your laptop may have come loose. Follow the link below and follow the directions and see if it gets you anywhere. First try to hook up a second monitor. when you plug in the monitor you will have to press Fn + F4 or something along those lines to get the display on both screens. If the lines show up on the second display then it is the computer that is messed up and you will have to replace it or take it to a pro to have this fixed.

POWER TURNS ON BUT SCREEN DOES NOT

Try Holding The Screen Up to A Bright Light And Look at it from an angle to see if you can see windows running without the light.... If you can..... The Problem Is Either Your LCD Bulb (needs Replacing) or It's the Power Inverter....

If.. You See No OS Running .. Just Black You Could Need Either A New Display ... or your Video Card/Chip is Shot...
Try Connecting an external Monitor if able to..... If It SHows Up On An External Monitor then Your Video Card/CHip is Good..

If You Get No Display, But The Black Screen Lights Up.... It Is Either The Display Cable Or The Display Panel Itself....

LCD laptop screen

It is definitely the screen or the inverter. Usually the screen and inverter come as one piece. I would check with the manufacturer. Unfortunately for you, the LCD is one of the most expensive parts to replace on a laptop.

Just the simple fact of you mentioning that it works fine with an external monitor tells me that its not the video card. If it was the video card, you would see the exact same thing happening on your external monitor as well.

Hope this helps!
