You will need to check You Tube to find a Dismantle on your product and follow the step guide on here, the procedure should be similar.
Check 1st that your External HDD has an P.C. internal HDD inside, from You Tube, before dismantle of your External HDD. Connections for an Internal Laptop HDD may have same connections as P.C. not sure though.

It may be that you need a driver for that particular external hard drive.

Visit: http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/ and search for your specific model and see if a driver for 64-bit Windows 7 is available.

A computer that is running Windows XP cannot detect a USB flash drive, an Apple iPod, or an external hard disk drive

To fix this problem, delete the UpperFilters registry value and the LowerFilters registry value. These values may cause access problems. (from Microsoft website)

If your drive came with an installation cd I would recommend that you install that first and then try to connect your hard drive after the disk installation, it should then be recognised. What version of windows are you using? It should be recognised by xp. Good luck. Andrew

I have verbatim external drive usb 2.0. It used to function properly...but now Windows(xp) doesn't recognise this device. I have tried it on serveral pc's & same result.

An external drive has two major components -- the disk-drive and the USB-to-disk-drive adapter. Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and connect it as a 'slave' disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if that interface hardware is the problem (and if the disk-drive by itself is 'readable').
