My d40 won't focus with the nikkor 18-55 lens. The shooting information display will not even let me highlight the focus area.

I found these specs on various lens and compatibilites:

Compatible Lenses*1: Nikon F mount with AF coupling and AF contacts Type G or D AF Nikkor: 1) AF-S, AF-I: All functions supported; 2) Other Type G or D AF Nikkor: All functions supported except autofocus; 3) PC Micro-Nikkor 85mm f/2.8D: Can only be used in mode M; all other functions supported except autofocus; 4) Other AF Nikkor*1/AI-P Nikkor: All functions supported except autofocus and 3D Color Matrix Metering II; 5) Non-CPU: Can be used in mode M, but exposure meter does not function; electronic range finder can be used if maximum aperture is f/5.6 or faster; 6) IX Nikkor lenses cannot be used.

Has this lens worked before in the autofocus mode? If it has, there is a mechanical or electronic problem within the body of the camera. If it hasn't worked in autofocus, you might only have manual focusing as an option.
I would run it by a camera repair shop, just to see what they think.
It might be a simple interlock problem, you never know.
Good luck, however, thanks for using FixYa, and hope this helps.

The lens and housing will probably need to be replaced, but I would take it to a camera repair shop and have it checked to rule out other problems before proceeding with repairs.

Why wont my Nikon af nikkor 70-300mm G lens autofocus its self with my D5000 camera

The D5000 does not have a focus motor in the body, relying on the lens to have one. The old 70-300mm G lens does not have a focus motor, relying on the camera to have one. Thus, this combination will not autofocus.
The newer 70-300mm AF-S G lens, as well as the even newer 70-300mm VR AF-S lens, do have the autofocus motor and thus will autofocus on the D5000.

Nikon D40 will not focus when shutter pressed 1/2 down

has the lens stuck up? put it temporarily on 'M" and try to turn the focus ring. this should be freely turning;

otherwise you may want to check the camera body to lens electrical contacts (silver).. a small dab of alcohol to a q-tip.. make sure its not that wet..then try to clean the contacts.

Auto focusing problem

Your camera is only compatable with AFS-type lenses because it has no screw-drive motor.  You can only use AFS Nikkors and Sigma HSM lenses (the lens actually has a motor inside).  You were misinformed.  Bring the lens back and ask for a refund. Take that money and purchase a compatable lens somewhere else.
