SOURCE: How to replace air filter on Troy-bilt TB20CS?

May be air filter but sounds more like your muffler is stopped up. First take the muffler off and see if it runs better without it. If so, burn the carbon out of the muffler and clean the muffler port on the engine. If not, then remove the four screw at the very end and disassemble. The ait filter is in that area. I just had this same issue. I found out that you have to take the cord out of the handle then put the spool in. You then rotate the spool back in and align the spool with the spring and fish out the cord which will put a small amout of tension on it. You keep the tension on it and put the handle back on.

Troy bilt pull cord wont retract

Recoil spring is broken or slipped out of retention slot. Coil needs to be retentioned or replaced. Unless you have done this before I recommend taking to pro. This is easy job if you have the jig but almost impossible if you don't.

It appears that the recoil spring has broken and you will have to pull it apart to replace it

Pull cord engaging

recoil clutch fingers are broken or stuck. Take the recoil cover off and look at it while pulling the cord to see if the fingers arent coming out. If the fingers are still coming out then you have worn out grooves on starter cone where fingers engage to turn the motor. If the recoil is damaged a new one can be purchased as a unit from Troy Bilt online for a reasonable price.

Installing new pull cord and it wont retract, what did I do wrong?

You have to wind up the spring before installing the cord. Look which way the spring goes, wind it up tight, back off enough to insert the cord through the hole in the outside housing, tie a knot inside the inner pulley. Slowly let the spring recoil while allowing the cord to go in. Cut the cord to the proper length, put the end thru the handle, knot it and attach the assembly back to the mower.

Pull cord will not retract

Sounds like the rope is caught between the rope pulley and the housing that covers the recoil spring and pulley. You will have to remove the housing that has the recoil spring in it.Be careful of the rope at this point because if this is the problem the rope will want to rewind as soon as the housing releases the rope. You should be able to inspect the rope for frayed spots. If you need to replace the rope, pull it out till you see the spring and clamp it with a pair of needle nose vice grips. If this is anything else in this area it will be a part replacement. Well hope this helps.

I always add this for your information. If this is not the solution that you are looking for please re post because when we pick a question to answer FixYa takes it out of the questions.

How do I fix/replace the starter rope on a TB20CS (Tuffy Troy Bilt String Trimmer) that's broken? Do I need any special tools?

Probably no special tools needed. Take the starter assy off. Turn the recoil in the direction it will turn if you are pulling the rope. When it gets tight, hold it there and install the new rope. When it is installed, let go of the recoil and it will draw the rope in.

ReplaCE pull cord on tb20cs troybuilt weedeater

This repair procedure will involve some time and labor and is somewhat detailed. You basically have to strip the unit right down to the motor and crankshaft to get at the recoil unit. TORX fasteners are used exclusively on these units and without this type of tools, you won't be able to remove any of the parts and covers to get there. And once you get there you have to know how to preload the starter spring with no pull rope in it so it will draw the new rope you are installing into the recoil...that procedure is not to bad with some help...getting to that point is all the fun!

remove the top cover. look inside while pulling rope briskly, you should see two dogs fly out and retract when the cord reaches its end. if not, check for dirt in the system and clean out. if no dogs, you will have to remove the system from the housing, be careful of the spring. check for any broken drive parts. also check flywheel cup for damage where the dogs come into contact with it.
