Question about Amana Kitchen Ranges

Amana DRB1801AW Bottom Freezer Refrigerator. Hello. I have a loud intermittent buzz which lasts for about 7 seconds, followed by a loud click, as in a relay closing, coming from the back of the fridge. This repeats every few minutes, and the unit completely stopped cooling over night.

Why this ended up in kitchen ranges I don't know.

  • barok129 Aug 26, 2010

Greetings. The buzzing is definitely not from vibrations. It corresponds with the compressor attempting to come on, but failing. It began on Sunday. By Monday morning the freezer was thawing. I unplugged the fridge for the day, and now the buzzing cycle starts immediately upon plugging it back in. The compressor simply isn't functioning. I cleaned as much dust as I could get at from the bottom of the machine, thinking it might be a thermal overload, but it has had no effect. Also, the fan in back is running fine.

Compressor doesn't come on at all. I just hear the loud buzzing for about 8 seconds, followed by a distinct click which ends the buzzing. The fridge is quiet for about 3 minutes then the whole thing repeats.

Would you recommend trying a Supco RCO410 3-in-1 relay overload device to try and get the compressor to start?

    Concise, accurate, and helpfull. Thankyou!

It could be a bad compressor relay, a bad compressor or very likely a bad relay-overload-run capacitor. You can find the parts for your fridge here:
http://www.appliancepartsworldwide.com/Store_SearchResults.aspx?S=610222&ST=PBM

I would start with the relay. If the compressor needs replacement I would just get a new fridge.
Thank you,
Lee

Such a sound usually comes from one of 2 sources:

- the compressor / pump, or
- an electrical problem.

1st check if the pump is securely fastened to the frame (where the pump's feet are attached to a sheet metal piece - this piece is often supported by springs / rubber cushions - so it can move / vibrate without shaking the entire fridge). You may want to be sure that things are "clean" here too. If this doesn't help, the pump may be imbalanced - which can cause "excessive" vibration or buzzing. You could replace the pump enirely.
If the buzz is not caused by the motion / vibration of the pump itself, there may be an electrical problem - which can be dangerous. so you may want to call for professional repair / service.

also note, a fridge is a mecanical device - some noise is normal.

3 of the most common fridge noise makers are the evaporator fan motor, condenser fan motor and the defrost timer. The evaporator fan motor is in the freezer section. Often when the freezer door is opened, the noise will get louder. The condenser fan motor is at the back bottom of the fridge. The defrost timer can be found in several different spots, at the back of the fridge, inside the fridge or under at the front are some common areas to find the defrost timer. Do not attempt to oil any of these parts, replacing them is the best repair.

Sorry to say most times this is a faulty compressor. A compressor is a electric motor and pump mounted from springs inside the black dome, if one of these springs stretches or breaks the motor and pump hits the outer casing dome and bangs when it shuts off. Other things to check for, tubing touching one another, something fallen behind the fridge, condenser fan motor blade hitting something, defrost condensing pan out of place.

Buzzing noise near compressor on an Amana refer. PARB1917CSO

I can help , It was the relay , they can blow when they experience a hard start , by replacing it and having the same issue this means the compressor is locked up , they sell a booster for this that can sometimes free the compressor up , its called an rco410 , this part will be your only chance to get your compressor going again. let me know if you have any other questions and tell me how it works out.

Buzzing intermittent

It sounds like the ice maker. If you don't have the water hooked up, and the ice sensor bar is in the down position, the ice maker assembly will attempt to make ice continuously.
Solution is easy: raise the ice sensor bar until it clicks in the up position. It will lock in this position, and the ice maker will not cycle anymore.

most likely the compressor relay is the clicking noise but i think the problem is most likely the compressor is starting to go bad and is lcoking up. if the refig is under 5 yrs old it is most likely still in warranty by amana
