It could be your LCD inverter is going bad. CLICK HERE to see. It is relatively easy to replace. Remove the LCD screen bezel screws and gently lift away close to the bottom. The inverter is on the bottom right under the LCD itself. Usually 2 screws to remove and unplug then replace. If it is not the inverter then it is your LCD backlight in which case you will need to replace the screen.

Unfortunately, you're not going to be able to get a new cable as Toshiba will not sell OEM replacement parts to anyone but an authorized repair center.

This may just as likely be a problem with the sockets/plugs as with the cable itself, as they are rather fragile. It may be worth spending a few bucks for a used cable just to see if it will solve your problem. Also be sure that the thin plastic shim found on the top of most of these cable ends is still there, as they can come off rather easily, and the lack of it will cause a poor connection.

Your other alternatives are (1) Toshiba repair center, or (2) using the external monitor.

Hope that's helpful.

When I close the lid on my Toshiba X205S9800 laptop and reopen the lid, the screen is black. The computer is on and running as I left it, but there is no picture. I have had this problem for quite sometime...

when you close the lid your toshiba goes into hibernate mode. to disable this perform the following.
Note: you must have administrator priviledges to be able to perform this.

To make hibernation unavailable, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
  2. In the search results list, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as Administrator.
  3. When you are prompted by User Account Control, click Continue.
  4. At the command prompt, type powercfg.exe /hibernate off, and then press ENTER.
  5. Type exit and then press ENTER to close the Command Prompt window

Known issue. The windows default settings for power saving mode tell the computer to switch it off (sleep) when the lid is closed. The sleep mode doesn't turn completely the computer, just the visualization devices (mainly screen, also some other components not required for the computer).
What I would advise you to do after restarting the computer (press on the power button for a very long time, until you cannot hear it working), is to change the power settings.
go to control panel, choose "power options", then see if you have "choose what closing the lid does". If it's not there (not all laptops show this option), choose "change when the computer sleeps", then change " put the computer to sleep" to "never".

That should do it. if you have any questions feel free to ask me.

Black screen

It sounds like your “Suspend Switch” is acting up. The Inspiron 1501 uses a mechanical switch to detect if the lid of the system is open or closed. A camber is built into the hinge of the system that activates the suspend switch plunger as the LCD is lowered to the closed position. If the switch is broken or nonfunctional, then it can be replaced separately. It is located under the hinge cover next to the right hinge on the system.
