Place your windows cd/dvd in the tray and boot to the cd. When asked if you want to install windows, there will be a repair option further down towards teh bottom, or you will be asked to click R like before. The repair only works if the cd is in the tray.

Dell inspiration 1520 doesn't go past Windows Error window. My computer goes past the dell loading screen, then Windows Error. After I pick one (or go into f8 and pick system repair) then the screen goes...

Possible hard drive failure. You may have to reinstall the operating system and if that doesn't work then you have to get a new hard drive. The tech may or may not be able to recover your files from the damaged unit.

Dell Insprion 1720 latop does not load Windows Vista. Only get a black screen. I have rebooted and only get black screen.

Try repairing the boot sequence by putting in your vista cd and going to the repair option when it loads up. There is a boot repair option.

Screen goes black after logo appears

Windows isn't loaded, it's corrupted. You will have to reinstall. If you have some data that you can't lose then boot from a Linux Live-cd and recover them before reinstalling.

Inspiron 1520-before finishes loading desktop screen goes black..

As it works ok in safe mode, I suggest you check that your graphics drivers are up to date.

You should be able to download the latest from the Dell website.

Dear, Requested data was not in memory. An invalid system memory address was referenced. Defective memory (including main memory, L2 RAM cache, video RAM) or incompatible software (including remote control and antivirus software) might cause this Stop message, as may other hardware problems. Computer starts then goes to black screen and system recovery wont work error code 257'

Hi,
The display drivers maybe corrupt.

Boot the machine into safe mode. Right click on My Computer (XP) Computer (Vista) and select manage from the sub menu.
When the window pops up select Device Manager.
A device list will populate. When it has look down the list for Display Adapters. Click on the + icon next to Display Adapters to it expands. Right click on the display adapter and select uninstall.

Restart the computer and let it boot in normal mode.
If it boots in normal mode let it detect the Display and install the drivers for it.
I would be a good idea to update the display drivers via the Dell Support website

Regards.

Lap top wont boot up past the windows screen

This generally indicates that a sector in the hard drive has failed, and the hard drive will need to be replaced. With a bad sector the drive reads to the point of the bad sector and past the bad sector, but can't put the info together, so it tries to boot, but can't. Unfortunately, your only option is replacing the hard drive.
