SOURCE: WILL NOT BUILD PRESSURE

Many craftsman compressor are built by champbell hausfeld using a dry type of cylinder and piston (no oil, no crankcase). If dry type, check for worn cylinder and piston ring. Pieces of the vinyl ring can jamb between the reed valves in the head causing air to escape from the intake. If your compressor has a crankcase and oil, check for broken reed valves in head. Spray soap solution on hoses, checkvalve, drainvalve, and fittings to check for leaks. Most likely problem is reed valves broken or open. Parts are available from sears or match parts to chpower.com. enjoy

SOURCE: air compressor fills, but slows down as the pressure builds

sounds like you need a new check valve which should be somewhere between the compressor outlet piping, tubing, etc and the tank which prevents the air in tank to back feed to the compressor which would cause hard starting and could damage the motor easy way to check is when you shut off the compressor with some air in the tank if the check valve is bad it would continue to bleed air out out the unloader valve .the unloader valve on your unit is most likely part of the pressure switch when the unit shuts of it should only bleed down the pressure in the pump so it would make it easy to start when needed hope i didn't confuse you

SOURCE: Drain valve in Porter Cable air compressor

this valve works backwards, you screw it out to stop airflow. If that doesn't work, replace the valve.

Air compressor slow to build pressure, and noisy.

All large air compressors are very noisy.

How long it takes to come up to pressure depends on the size of the compressor piston(s), how fast they are running and the size of the air tank attached to it. (and if the tank or hoses have leaks)
A 20 gallon tank could easily take 10 minutes to get all the way up to 120 psi. 120 is very high, and probably the limit for the compressor. Depending on what you're using it for, try dropping the setting to say 80-90psi.

How to Fix an Air Compressor That Doesn't Build

  • If you are asking is it possible to repair a leaky air compressor tank the answer is no, not without risk of life or death. When the pressure builds great enough, what ever has plugged that hole, will blow out and it will hurt of kill whoever that plug happens to hit.

Compressor squeaks as pressure begins to build. Not from belt. Does not squeak when no pressure in tank.

Air leaking back from tank check valve or leaking reed valves can make a squeaking or vibrating noise. With pressure in tank remove fitting at the tank check valve and test for leak with soapy water. If leaking, replace with generic valve. If no leak, reinstall fitting and let all the air out of the tank. With empty tank and air filter removed, start compressor and feel strength of suction at intake. When you hear the squeak retest strength of suction at intake and compare. If reed valves are leaking, you will feel less suction as tank pressure increases, and in severe leaking valves, you will actually feel air blowing out of intake. Repair/replace reeds and /or leaking gaskets in head of compressor. Good luck

Compressor runs, builds up pressure, but wont come out of hose/???

When the pressure regulator fails, no pressure will be available at hose. Replace the regulator with generic available at Lowes or bypass. To bypass the regulator (this method will give you full tank pressure to hose) remove the safety valve (or gauge if it threads directly into tank) and install a tee fitting. On one side of tee fitting reinstall the safety and the other port is for quick connector. You can also install a regulator here if you would like to save time and the old regulator is difficult to remove. Good luck

Will not allow me to regulate air. compressor kicks on and builds to max pressure.

All air compressors build pressure in the tank(s) to their maximum allowed by the pressure switch. The regulator only controls the pressure of the air available at the outlet. That's why they have two pressure guages, one for tank pressure and one for outlet pressure. If you cannot control the air pressure at the outlet then you have a defective/broken regulator. Dewalt does not make the regulator as a seperate part for their air compressors, you have to buy the entire manifold which includes a regulator to fix this problem.

Try draining the air out of the tank, all of it.Now turn on the compressor,if it will come on,and build up to the cut off point, then the check valve/pressure release valve is bad, replace it.
