With the switch in the off position it will ground out spark to the spark plug. take a small straight blade screw driver and insert into switch where the key should go. turn one notch clockwise. should fire. or get another key. most riders & pushers take the same key.

The kill switch may be mis adjusted. Sometimes the cable stretches and you need to adjust it or shorten the cable.

What causes backfire issues on a craftsman riding mower

The most common reasons any motor backfires are timing being out of adjustment or dirty spark plugs, in this case a dirty plug. Carbon deposits cling to the electrode, effectively changing the gap of the plug, or glowing long enough after the actual firing to cause another firing in between the normal firing, (back fire). I'd lean towards a good spark plug cleaning or just a new plug.

Either timing is off or you may have turn key off with engine hot and running in high speed. Always return engine to idle for at least 30-45 seconds before turning engine off.

Mower backfires and not start

Sounds typical of a broken key on the flywheel which allows the timing to fire at the wrong time. Flywheel on a mower is under the pull start mechanism housing. Caused by hitting something solid with the blade and the momentum of the engine shaft cracks or shears the metal key part. Remove the flywheel carefully and put in a new key.

Its back firing and keeps cutting off cleaned the filter

Hi: Did you hit a rock or other solid object ,Some times if you hit a hard object it will Shear or partly move the Flywheel Key and throws the timing off which will cause kick back and back firing. If it is back firing through the carburetor it is probably flooding cause by a dirty or faulty fuel jet and seat, if so clean and check the jet in the carburetor. Hope I have helped you AL

Why does my Lawn mower doesn't start but will back fire?

Make sure that your flywheel - the part on top with fins that spins with the motor - is firmly attached to the motor shaft. There is a metal locking key inside that if it breaks or falls out, allows the timing to go out which will cause backfiring.

I have a husqvarna self-propelled lawn mower/keystart with leaf bag. i hit a small tree root and now it wont start. the cord back fires a little when you pull it. will a bent blade stop it from cranking?

Hi hardister2...

Sounds like you sheared the key that holds the flywheel to the crankshaft, this is a common occurance when you hit something hard with the mower running.
You will have to remove the flywheel to replace the key.
No a bent blade will not stop the mower from running, but should always be replaced
It can cause problems later with the seal under the mower, it will start to leak oil.

My mower is miss fire and some time will turn of

You probably have a sheared flywheel key, which means that maybe at some point, the blade on the mower came in contact with a very solid, fixed object. There could be other causes too. Flywheel key isn't real hard to fix. The air-gap of the magneto could be set wrong or become out of range and cause this problem too.

Lost the key to my mower what do I do if I can't get a replacement right away

I think any Craftsman mower key will fit. Most keys are just universal to keep the kids from starting something they should not.
