After trying to formulate a simple explanation of how 1080i is a poor cousin to 1080p, I found this done for me in several places already.
One of them is found here:

Will not display 1080p from cable company. i have a hd box hooked up

Most cable HD-boxes output either 720p or 1080i, not 1080p.
Set your TV to 1080i or 720p.
Set the HD box to the same resolution.

Trying to use ps3, even after using hdmi cable on input 6 or 7, it says check your device output and i see green lines on my screen?

hi
There maybe some problem with your TVs resolution. ps3 outputs full hd high resolution video(1080p) through its HDMI. May be your TV is not supporting that resolution. Connect ps3's component video out to your TV's component video input and then try. if it ask for any resolution selection. select 720p or 1080i, above that resolution your TV will not support. Your tv is hd ready one, not full hd. ps3 's HDMI out is full hd (1080p).
or try this
Connect your ps3 to any full hd tv and then goto video setup of ps3. change resolution to 1080i (down scaling ). then connect to your TV via HDMI. surly u will get the video.
ok

I have a model wd65732 with an HDMI connection from my HD sat reciever to the t.v. however the maximum resolution available is 1080i can you help explain?

Your television has a max resolution of 1080p but your Satellite receiver only outputs 1080i. The only 1080p content right now is Blu-ray. No mainstream tv programs output 1080p.

How do I go from 480p to 1080dpi on my 65inch HDTV

If you're using an HDMI cable your display will automatically adjust the settings based upon the video source. Make sure that your source is capable of outputting 1080p. If it's an HD Cable Box or DVR, the maximum resolution it can display is 1080i. If you have one of these HD boxes, set it to only display 1080i as there will be a delay every time you change channels from a channel that is not naturally at 1080i.
If your source is a standard DVD player, it can only display images in 480i (or 480p if it is Progressive Scan) and therefore your TV will display the picture in 480 resolution. If your source is an upconverting DVD player it will display up to 1080p however, Keep in mind that DVD's are in 480 resolution and that regardless of upconversion (or upscaling, though improved, the picture will not be in HD.
The only way to achieve a true 1080p (not dpi... that's dots per inch... that's a printer term. The "p" is for Progressive Scan as opposed to an "i" for Interlaced) is from a 1080p source, i.e., a Blu-Ray disc player playing a Blu-Ray Disc with the use of an HDMI cable. Component Cables can achieve 720p/1080i only with your TV as it does not support 1080p over component cables.
As an aside, there are some media players that support 1080p output and some DirecTV Boxes and DVR's d oas well for 1080p Pay Per View movies.

Is it a 1080 for hdtv

1080i or 1080p are both HD. the i and the p stand for the way the images are displayed. 1080i is interlaced, and 1080p is progressive scan. 1080p is the best hands down for fast moving sports and things like that, but for just watching your basic night time lineup, 1080i is fine.

None

There is no conversion possible to 1080p for the TV. The TV it self is a analoge product, even if it is a HD ready set, the most it will be able to give you is 1080I. The deflection circuit and CRT's is what limits this.
Hope this helps,

First of all your system, tv, must be able to perform your request, Secondly, your service must be able to provide the 1080i or 1080p, not all service's provide the service with the equipment they provided you (your box). Check with your provider.
