Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

There is power to the fan and you can hear it trying to turn(it does spin so its not the fan)but no air is blowing, could it be the fan motor,is there a way to tell if the motor is any good,or is there something else that I can check.I am currently unemployed so anything I can do to save a service call would really help. Thanks

Gas package unit

the bushing or the bearing in the motor may have already worn out. or may need some lubrication. the rotor is trying to turn but it's stiff and won't continue to turn. dont continue to turn on if it wont spin otherwise you'll damage the motor further. it might also be the busted capacitor "if it has"

My maytag air conditioner turns on you hear the motor but no cold air and the fan does not blow

Shut the power off to the unit, spin the fan blade to see if it spins freely. If it doesn't spin freely, (there appears to be a little drag when you spin it),the bearings are bad, if it does spin freely, then try moving the motor shaft from side to side if there’s any play in the shaft side to side then the bearings are worn and motor needs replaced. Then, check the capacitor, if it’s bulging even slightly, the capacitor is bad and needs replaced. Most of the time people replace the capacitor if motor seems ok. If capacitor is ok, turn power on to see if the motor is getting the proper voltage, if it is and not trying to run, then the windings are probably open, the motor's bad and needs replaced.

The fan motor could have been your problem all the time, because if the fan doesn't come on or runs slow, it causes high head pressure,
which causes high amps, which could trip your breakers.

Fan won't turn on. When I turned it on for the first time this summer, it won't blow cold air. I tried the different settings. The air compressor comes on, but the fan doesn't. Nothing happens with the fan...

Fan doesn't spin

If it moves easily change the capacitor, if turns hard try oiling the motor or replacing it.

Fan Stops blowing air

Isthis a window unit? It sounds like it. There could be a problem with your fan switch or the fan motor itself? Multi-speed motors can lose one speed at a time. It really sounds like the fan motor is bad. If the compressor starts in the cool mode, and the fan doesn't, the fan motor could be locked up. See, if you can spin the motor by hand? If you can, then something is bad within the motor. Now, if the motor has a capacitor, check for a loose or burned wire. Good luck.

Fan or capacitor?

I would say the motor is bad but to be sure test the voltage to the motor with a multimeter, you can also phisically spin the motor and if that makes it work a little not as fast and blow enough air then you know its the motor this works if you dont have a multimeter.
