Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Hi, I cannot get a part number to replace the freezer door gasket for my Amana R series bottom freezer regrigerator model number BS20RBW. I noticed you were helping another person with a similar problem. Any ideas? Can I get a generic gasket if Amana cannot provice one? thanks, Jon

I had just submitted a question in regards to my Amana Freezer not keeping the food frozen and the coils freezing up to the point that we have had to defrost the freezer twice in the past 3 months.

Non defrosting units are a thing of the past, almost all fridges made in the last 20 years are self-defrosting. If the coils are freezing up, what kind of ice is it? Clear ice near the bottom indicates your defrost drain is clogged. Snowy, fluffy ice indicates the defrost system is the problem. Make sure the fan in the freezer is blowing freely. Then check the continuity of the defrost heating element. If its OK, the limit switch is bad. If its not replace the defrost heater. Also don't overlook the possibility the door gasket is leaking, allowing warm moist air in that condenses on the coils! To check a gasket, insert a dollar bill between the door and the gasket, close door on bill, pull bill out, if good resistance gasket is good, if little or no resistance gasket is bad or needs adjusting.Do this teas all the way around each door.

Tip

Replacing your evaporator fan.

Have you noticed that when you open the freezer door that you hear a fan running? That's the evaporator fan. When that fan motor goes bad, you'll notice that "the freezer works mostly OK, but the refrigerator/beer section is warm".

Now, this tip is listed for a top freezer but the technique is basically the same for a side by side or even bottom freezer models. Matter of fact, this tip is for all domestic makes and models EXCEPT for Amana (when an Amana evap fan fails, it's generally NOT the failure of the fan motor... 98% of the time the problem is the defrost limiter).

Before you replace the motor, you'll obviously need a new one. Look inside the refrigerator compartment for a "data sticker". Copy the model number off of that (Kenmore's will be all digits and look something like this ***.1234567. Where "*" is a series of 3 digits. Follow this link to see what I mean) and then go online to the Sears parts website (it doesn't matter if you bought your fridge from Sears or not... this is a PARTS lookup only) and enter the model number. Then you can "filter" your search simply by typing "evaporator" (no quotes) into the filter box. Then you have the part number, cool Huh? Armed with this, you can call a local appliance parts retailer OR plug that part number into any search engine and go price shopping!

UNPLUG YOUR FRIDGE BEFORE PERFORMING REPAIRS!!!

I have an Amana Regrigerator/bottom freezer (ABB2224DEB). The freezer and refrigerator are not cooling. Have already cleaned dust out from underneith.

The problem can be temperature not set properly or any of fridge or freezer door not closed properly and cool air is getting leaked out. These are basic possibilities which first need to be checked. But if these possibilities are checked ok and still the problem is same, then its weak compressor issue. This will help. Thanks.Helpmech.

Motor still running after gasket replacement

it will take at least 24 hours for the freezer to settle down to the correct temp -18c.the water is the frozen condensate that builds up inside the outer door over a period of time and should be allowed to drain away when you do a full 48hour defrost once a year....frost free means frost free where there is an air flow.....

Our Amana was bought in 1994. It's a bottom door freezer and has been working fine until gasket was replaced (or at least, we think so). We hadn't really kept track of the temperature until we noticed...

I know this isn't very helpful, but you already know it's time for a new fridge! The life expectancy of the average refridgerator is 15 - 20 years...the good news is in todays economy, retail stores are slashing prices to increase sales, so what you would have paid a year or two ago would have been more than what you'll pay today! Happy shopping!

Having a hard time finding gaskets for the refrigerator and freezer doors for Amana BX20QW. Do you carry them and is there anything I should be aware of in doing the job myself?

Hi, Part # 67003551 is the freezer gasket in black. What color do you need and could you get the exact model # off the label inside the fresh food section. There should be another letter at the end.
I can get you gasket #

I have an Amana bottom freezer frig. The freezer is starting to show frost inside and build up. Also I noticed some white snow looking stuff under on the front corner. Its not cold like ice but hard white...

the ref. is pulling in air from the gasket.check gasket by using a dollar bill.shut the freezer door with dollar bill between gasket and freezer.if you can pull the bill out wit ease then you must replace gasket.if frost is on back panel then you have a defrost problem.but it sounds like a gasket.

Amana BX22RW Freezer Compartment Icing

Ya hit it right on the head. Sounds like a classic "pulling in moisture" problem. See if you can seal that air leak any way you can. That moisture can freeze up air channels and block the refer compartment from getting cool air from the freezer compartment eventually.
