The hard drive is brand new and it's not recognized by the laptop. I can see it in the remover hardware securely section, either in the Storage manage section, but it says "not Initialized", when I try to Initialize, it says write protected. I have Windows Xp, SP2. I tried changing the writen protect file in regedit, but the problem persist. Thanks for your help

Is this the first time or have you used it before? Is there any files or documents saved?

First try it on another computer and check whether it's detected or not. Once it's detected, format it. I hope you know how to format it. [Right click the Drive after opening the "My Computer" and select "Format", and on the "Format" window select "Quick Format", then "Start", when it's completed, click "Ok" and then "close"]. If your usb bus can't detect it at the first attempt, after formatting it, you'll have no more problem [make sure that there's no other usb device connected on the computer while you are trying this, if possible try on all the usb ports of your computer.]

If the same problem persists on another computer, then try changing the usb cable, maybe it has a defect or it could be internal problem (Did you try it at the Store when you purchased it?). But let's think positive and proceed.

There's another options that you can format, Right-click "My Computer" >> "Manage" >> and on the left pane click "Disk Management" and look around the drive (you may need to find out by it's drive name). After it's located, right click and select "Format" and do the same as mentioned above (formating steps).

Let me know after you are done.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Well, I have only one option :-), Boot your computer into Safe Mode and connect the hard drive to the usb port, open the command prompt and format it. Let me give you the hints..

Once it's connected, open the command prompt. i.e. Start > Run and type in "cmd", then press "enter" [excluding the quotes] type in "cd\" and "Enter". Open the my computer and find out the drive name/letter of the external hard disk. Let's assume it's "K" Drive, now in the command prompt, type in "K:" > hit enter, again type in "format K:" then press enter twice, on the next step, press Y followed by Enter, you'll see the status of the progress, wait for few seconds until it's completed and assign a name when you are asked, press "Enter" and you are done.

    You can refer this illustration:

    Once again Good luck

Then assign it's Drive Letter from the Disk Management. I hope you know all these. This should be in the first step, without a drive letter was it showing on the "My Computer" folder? I don't think so. Open "Disk Management" right click the drive and "change drive letter..." or you may see as "Assign drive letter.."

    (Do this in safe mode.)

  • rebeca_elena Aug 25, 2010

    Ok.
The hard drive appears in storage management with a black stripe and says at the left:
    Disk 3. Unknown. Not initialize.
On the rigth (under the black stripe): Unallocated.
On both cases appears the size of the drive. On properties says its working properly. The controller is installed and ready to use (that's what windows says).
If I try to asigne the drive letter in "New sample volume" it says that it can be done because its not initialize. If I try to initiallize (rigth click on the left side of the disk) it says that's writen protected.
    I'm going crazy in here!!!!

This is also driving me crazy :-)... since it's not yet detected once, the problem is very hard to sort out. Let's try another trick.. In the Disk Management, right click the Drive and select "Properties". On the "Properties" again "Tools" and from the available lists, click on the Disk name and again "Properties", again click "Policies" tab and check whether "Enable Write caching on the disk" is selected or not. If it's not select it, click ok and restart your computer.

  • rebeca_elena Aug 26, 2010

    It's not selected.
    Restart.
    Same condition.
I'll try tomorrow with the different cable.

Hey! did i make something not very clear? I guess, it should be selected. Well, just let me know the updates..

    Good luck.

Hi. If the disk is new and can't be initialized in the disk manager, return the unit to the seller and ask for replacement. It is possible that either the disk or the enclosure board was damaged.

The external drive is getting power from the "USB port. Remove all USB devices connected to your laptop, connect the external drive to a USB v2.0 port (make sure that it is a USB v20 to have enough power required by the external drive).

If you have access to a MAC or Linux system, try to plug it there. It may have been partitioned and protected using Mac or Linux.

If you haven't tried creating a new partition, you may give it a try.

Open "Control Panel", click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management. In the Navigation pane, under Storage, click Disk Management. Right-click an unallocated region on your hard disk, and then click New Volume. (If there is an existing partition, right-click and delete the partition first then create a new one). Type the size of the volume you want to create in megabytes (MB) or accept the maximum default size, and then click Next. Accept the default drive letter or choose a different drive letter to identify the partition, and then click Next. Then format the drive with default settings.

  • rebeca_elena Aug 25, 2010

    It's not working.
I use every usb port, just in case, I get the same.
    Can't format, can't initialize.
    I'm officially crazy.

Try to use a different USB cable.

If you have tried initializing, partitioning, formatting, powered USB hub, different USB cable but all solutions failed.... that means you have a hardware error. Enclosure and hard disk can only be fixed by its manufacturer. There is no user serviceable parts except the USB cable.

  • rebeca_elena Aug 25, 2010

Nope. It's only activated the option new simple volume and do not permit the format because it's not initialized.
I do not have any unallocated in my laptop hard rive.

  • rebeca_elena Aug 25, 2010

Allrigth, I'll use a diferent cable tomorrow.....well, in some hours. it's 130 am and I have work. I'll let you know what happened with the diferent usb cable.
    Thank you so much!
    Good nigth.

Often when this happens, the drive was removed without "Safely Remove Hardware" . Try different computers (Operating Systems) and when recognized, Use the "Safely Remove Hardware" key. Then try it on your laptop.

The unit id defective - hardware fault. Your last hope is to remove the actual hard disk from within it, put it directly in a desktop and try to access it from there. If even now you can't then the hard disk is dead and everything on it is lost.

Please trouble shoot by trying the device on another laptop.

If it works on another system, it simply means it is not compatible with yours and you have to get a device that is compatible with your toshiba system.

Good try.

You can try:
  1. another USB cable
  2. try it on another computer
That will rule out the USB and any software/driver issues on your computer. If it doesnt work after that, there could be a problem with the drive itself

your computer might not able to support this capacity i suggest calling the manufacturer for Hardware compatibility, if it does not recognize, then the bios might not be able to recognize this big capacity, updating to higher version of bios might help but sometimes not, it all depends on your motherboard config.
