Question about Kenmore Vacuums

2 Answers

Both of the wheels are wobbly and loose on my Kenmore upright vacuum model 721.37060. I don't see where I can remove them to analyze and fix the problem, which seems to be that the wheels are loose on their axels. How do I get the wheels off and what do you think I'll find inside?

The nut in the middle of the wheel (once the wheel cap is removed with a screwdriver) doesn't have and threads, screwdriver slot or allen wrench fitting, it's just a round silver piece with a smooth hole that goes down to a flat bottom. The replacement part list has a "wheel assemby" that looks like a new wheel with a snap-on washer-like fitting...maybe I should buy it and there would be instructions with it, or can you help me at this point? I don't really want to buy this part, since I think it's just something that's worked loose but I can't get at it!!!

Most if not all vacuums have an access panel on the bottom. It may be held on by a couple of big plastic clips, the kind you squeeze together and it releases a door. Some have plastic screws. There may also be a couple of phillips screws along with it or screws alone.Every one I have had for at least 20 years has the bottom open.I constantly clean the brush/rollers due to strings and such.I have found a link for your vacuum. It appears that your answer is on page 18.You need Adobe to read it.If you do not have it it is a FREE,SAFE download,no junk.I have used it for years.Good luck! You should be able to see if the wheels are solid, or if there is a cap on the outside in the center of the wheel. If there is a cap, try and wedge a small flat screwdriver and lift the cap off. You should find a nut or splitpin in the center on the axle.

What you are explaining to me, sounds like a crimp washer. If you can get hold of a tube or a piece of metal pipe that will fit over the axle but still catch on the washer, try and tap the washer down using the tube and a small hammer. Hope this helps

You need to list the model number to this vacuum and be more specific with your question.
'fix the wheels back' is very unclear.

Kenmore upright Model 116 31912101 Brush doesn't turn. Little red reset pin doesn't move.

Something is jammed in it or the belt is bad.Turn it upside down. You will see 4-6 screws.Remove the screws and the plate they are holding. Now the brush is exposed. The belt hooks on to the brush and a small wheel on the other end.Remove the brush and belt.Make sure the area is free of debris. While you have it off, replace the belt.

Replace the belt on a upright vac

There is a very small wheel attached to the motors drive. Belt goes around the motor drive wheel and then around the drive roller assembly

Is there an easy way to see if a drive belt may be broken? It's so difficult to push my Kenmore upright vacuum!

Well there is only turning the vacuum over and see if the brush is rotating.

If it is not moving then you need to replace the belt.

If you need to know how to remove the bottom plate to replace the belt, please post the model number, the numbers you posted above are not the kenmore model numbers, the model numbers will look like this

316135912,FPF311PHSB, FGF316WGSK

My purple proggesive kenmore upright motor works but beater not beating help thank you

I just had the same problem - reset button didn't trip - cleaned the roller - ultimately found there is an override switch at the point where the hose attaches to the base of the vacuum - it disables the roller when you use the attachments. The hose had become loose (but not disconnected) enough to trip the switch. An easy fix after alot of tinkering... p.s. All those "experts" that said to change a belt obviously don't understand that this model is beltless...

Kenmore Model 116 upright beltless vacuum, agitator will not turn

I had the same problem. The agitator stopped turning after I sucked up a foreign object (my wife's watch) and it got jammed in the intake. After removal of the watch the agitator did not spin when turning on the machine, and the reset button never deployed (it remained buried in its housing and would not depress with a paper clip). The agitator was not bound and I could manually move it in both directions with ease. Faced with prospect of paying $125 or more for a repair, a good sharp kick to the chassis from the top promptly fixed the problem. I have found that kicking malfunctioning electronics often works.

Wheels

The axle for the rear wheels have worn into the cut outs in the body that it goes through and they are rubbing on the wheel wells. This common for this vacuum model , the only real fix is to replace the body assembly. Sears will have to do this, this is NOT somthing you want to tackle by your self.
As for the machine locking upright that is the release lever and it just needs to be replaced.
