Usually unplug it but you can also use a hair dryer and defrost the ice chute in the door.

Sometimes ice melts in ice maker. Water drips down and refreezes.

There is a heater built into the ice maker bottom to help release ice cubes from the machine. Under normal conditions the heater only come on when the ice maker starts to run and then jambs against the frozen cubes. When it stalls and jambs against the frozen ice cubes, the heater comes on to melt the cubes enough. I think you have a defective ice maker and the heater is coming on to much or at the wrong time, Since your temps go back to normal with the ice maker turned off, I am almost sure thats your problem.

most likely you have ice built up in the door or icemaker that has frozen hard easiest thing is to turn of fridge empty freezer leave door open to melt the ice remember to empty ice maker wash it out removing all ice ect. then when all is dry and clean start it up and see if that doesn't fix it.

Disconnect the ice maker line from the valve and watch to see if it has a slow drip. It doesn’t take much to eventually block the fill tube.
The valve can leak because of sediment in the water preventing it from closing or low water pressure.

The ice maker on my refrigerator has stopped making ice. Water is still flowing but the tray doesn't fill and the whole mechanism seems not to function.

Pour about 2/3 cup of water into the ice maker . If the ice maker dumps the frozen cubes , but doesn't refill with water , you should replace the water inlet valve , behind the refrig , where the wall water line connects to . If the Ice maker does not eject the frozen cubes , replace the ice maker .
Also , check the ice maker fill tube , from the back wall inside the freezer , to the ice maker fill cup , to see if it's frozen . If so , you will need to remove it , and clean the ice out . This would be caused by a " seeping " bad water valve also .
Check the coils under the refrig , to make sure they are clean of dust , lint , pet hair , etc , as this will raise the freezer temp above 5 degrees , which is the temperature which the ice maker needs to operate properly .

Movable arm on ice maker is frozen in place. No ice cubes are being made.

Use a hairdryer on the arm area to melt the ice, then see how it does. Too much air leaking into the freezer from the door gaskets or opening the door can cause excess icing.

I have the same problem. It turned out to be a problem with the doors. When my kids go to get a snack and close the fridge door (read slam the door) the air pressure pops the seal open on the freezer door causing the ice cubes to begin melting. The bottom items stay frozen (warm air rises). It took me a long time to work this out.
Remove the ice maker tray. Remove the ice blob, being careful to put the u-shaped wire ice-level sensing wire thing, in the up position or the system will dump ice and water all over the freezer. Put all back clean and dry and buy a velcro adhesive strip and install it on top of the freezer door to prevent the door from always blowing open.
Hope this helps

Ice dispenser in door clogged up or frozen

I would contact Hotpoint direct for this one. It sounds like a design fault to me.

What I think may be going on is that the cubes are melting too much, then refreezing lower down.

Set your freezer to -18, and the fridge to +2 and see if that changes things any.

Check seals in that area. Where is the moisture coming from to generate the frosting? - Is the location high in humidity?
