Please check connection, and retry. This is sooo frustrating

Same problem with Canon SD1000. All was working fine until 2 weeks ago. Vista updates must have casued the problem but I can't restore to a point far enough back to resolve the issue. I also tried reboting several times, a new usb cable and also downloading the most up to date software from Canon as suggested below. Nothing works.

I had the same problem and after a lot of research and attempting all the same things everyone else probably has I found the simplest answer possible. Go to Canon's website and download the most recent version of software compatible with your camera. It appears that some updates made to Windows can cause issues. Personally I was using XP on another computer fine but as soon as I went to Vista I started having these problems. I upgraded to version 6.1 of zoombrowser and it works flawlessly now. You may need to uninstall the device and software and start over but the new version will likely work.

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo management program such as Picasa ( http://picasa.google.com ).

Camera is not detected by computers I have a Canon SD750. Camera is not detected by the Windows XP SP3. A USB generic driver is added, and that's all. No removable media becames available. Canon software...

You may have a defective USB cable. Try a different cable, or try plugging the cable into a different USB plug on your computer. If neither of these work, the camera may have a defective USB plug on the camera. Double check that the camera is turned on. If all else fails, you can copy the photo files by removing the memory card from the camera and putting it in a card reader built into your computer, your printer, or use a separate memory card reader. You can buy them at most camera and computer stores - they are inexpensive, usually less than $20.
