This did NOT work on my DCP-770CW. I was unable to get into the maintenance mode. What DID work, was the following suggestion - solution 1:

    Solution 1:

    Pull out the AC plug.
Put back the AC plug while holding down the "Menu" button and keep holding it (15 sec): you're entering the Maintenance mode and "error 46" pops up in the display.
Select 8 by using the arrow buttons, push "OK" and select "0" and push "OK"
    Message 00:00 00:01 OK appears.
Push the "Mono" button 25 times until you see PURGE: xxxxx
    Select 2, push ok, select 7,push ok,select 8,push ok, select 3,push ok
    Purge counter indicates: purge: 00000
Switch off the printer, switch it on.

Solution 2: reset the ink counter

Press buttons OK, Menu, Mono Start one by one, followed by up arrow key four times. this should all be done as short a time as possible, around 3 seconds.
Enter maintenance mode 80, by pressing the up/down arrow key and set key to select numbers 8 and 0
Press blue MONO start button to select PURGE which requires it to be pressed a number of times before PURGE appears on the LCD screen of the printer
Use the up'down key and OK button to enter the reset code 2, 7, 8 and 3 keys to reset the counter.
Press Stop/Exit key to go to root of maintenance mode.
Enter 9,9 to exit maintenance mode

Hi. You need to reset the purge counter for this machine. Please see procedure below.

.
To reset purge counter
1) Enter machine maintenance mode (on MFC240C all four photo/copy/fax/scan lights flash in maintenance mode). Care is needed in maintenance mode, otherwise critical settings may be inadvertently corrupted.
FAX models with numerical keypads: Press the Menu/Set, *, 2, 8, 6 and 4 keys within two seconds. (if you fail to complete the correct key sequence within two seconds, press the Stop key to try again).
Other (non-FAX) models: Press the Menu/Set and Black Start keys. Next press the “up arrow” key four times to enter the maintenance mode).
2) Press the 8 then 0 keys in the initial stage of the maintenance mode to call up the machine’s log information list (function code 80).
3) Press the Black Start key several times to scroll through the log information list to reach the purge counter. The purge counter is the 25th item in the list.
4) Press the 2, 7, 8, and 3 keys in this order to reset the purge count to zero.
5) Press the Stop/Exit key to return to the initial stage of the maintenance mode.

Hi, I don't have a manual for the DCP 770CW, but I have the one that covers the 750CW.
The following is the section that covers how to put it into Maintenance mode, and how to step though to find the Purge counter, and then how to reset it. You may have to experiment a little if the exact keys/sequence doesn't match what you have on your machine's keyboard, but normally it isn't that difficult to work it out:
" (Note 2) This machine counts all purge operations and flushing operations performed since produced in order to prevent the ink absorber box and flushing box from overflowing with drained and flushed ink, respectively. An initial purge, for example, advances the counter by 163 + 432 = 595. When the purge or flushing counter approaches 9600 or 475852272, respectively, the "MACHINE ERROR 46" appears, and further purge or flushing operations are prohibited. Replace the ink absorber box and flushing box, and then reset their counters with the following procedure. 􀂄 Resetting purge or flushing counter 1) Press the Menu and Black Start (Mono Start) keys. Next press the key four times to make the machine enter the maintenance mode. The machine displays " " on the LCD, indicating that it is placed in the initial stage of the maintenance mode, a mode in which the machine is ready to accept entry from the keys. 2) Enter 8 and 0 using the / and OK keys in the initial stage of the maintenance mode to call up the machine's log information. (Function code 80. Refer to Section 9.4.21.) 3) Press the Black Start (Mono Start) key several times until the purge or flushing count appears on the LCD. 4) To reset the purge or flushing count, enter 2, 7, 8, and 3 using the / and OK keys. 5) Press the Stop/Exit key to return the machine to the initial stage of the maintenance mode. 6) To exit from the maintenance mode, enter 9 twice using the / and OK keys. 9-40 Confidential 9.4.21 Display of the Equipment's Log (Function code 80) 􀂄 Function The machine can display its log information on the LCD. This procedure allows you to reset the purge count. It is necessary to reset the purge count when the ink absorber box is replaced with a new one without replacing the main PCB. 􀂄 Operating Procedure (1) Enter 8 and 0 in the initial stage of the maintenance mode using the / and OK keys. The calendar clock appears on the LCD. (2) Press the Black Start (Mono Start) key. Pressing the key more than ten times calls up the following log information items on the LCD, one by one. (The following list does not include all items.) - Head property code - PictBridge information - Ink drop count, indicating how many droplets have been jetted out from each of the ink cartridges*1 - Ink drop count after near-empty, indicating how many droplets have been jetted out from each of the ink cartridges*1 after the ink cartridge sensor detects near-empty. - Total ink drop count, indicating how many droplets the machine has jetted out from each of the ink cartridges*1 since produced - Ink cartridge change count, indicating how many times ink cartridge replacement has been made for each color*1 - Jam count, indicating how many times a paper jam has occurred - Total page count, indicating how many pages have been printed since the machine was produced - PC print page count, indicating how many pages the machine has printed as an output device of the connected PC - Color copy page count, indicating how many copies in color have been made - Black copy page count, indicating how many copies in monochrome have been made - Memory card print page count, indicating how many pages have been printed from the memory card data - FAX page count, indicating how many received FAX pages have been printed (This item is not applicable to the models covered by this manual. This counter is always fixed to "0000000000.") - Purge count, indicating how many times the purge operation has been carried out (With the purge count displayed, entering 2, 7, 8, and 3 using the / and OK keys resets the purge count.)
"
Good luck.

Hi, just noticed that where I have cut and pasted from the manual, some symbols have not copied.

The obvious symbol that hasn't copied across is the one that refers to the "up arrow" and "down arrow" keys, so when reading the text, if there is just the word "key" or "/ key", this means it is referring to the up and/or down arrow keys.

    Sorry !

If anything else appears missing, let me know. Unfortunately the manual is in pdf format so doesn't copy well !

    Hi again,

The only thing I can suggest is to check your machine has the latest firmware installed. If you visit the Brother website and follow the "Support" links, you can search for downloads for your machine which should include any firmware updates. There are instructions on how to check which version is currently installed in the machine.
Only problem might be once it reaches error code 46 it might refuse to accept firmware updates - I don't know because I've never seen this personally.

Other than that, the reason for the error 46 maybe something other than the Purge counter reaching its upper limit, such as there is a fault with the electronics on the main circuit panel.

There is no simple way to check the panel and all the 750 manual says is to substitute a new one.

Brother parts are very difficult to obtain as a private individual and even if you can, are very expensive. So much so, it is normally cheaper to buy a new machine. Same goes for having it repaired by a Brother agent.

    Sorry.

Clean unable 46 error

Here is the Error: "Unable to Clean" (code 46) solution:

The machine counts all purge (cleaning) operations in order to prevent the internal ink absorber box from overflowing with purged ink. An "initial purge", for example, advances the purge counter by 187 + 420 = 607. When the purge counter approaches 6400, an internal "Machine Error 46" is generated. Further purge operations are prohibited, and therefore the printer becomes unuseable.

The proper reset code sequence to reset DCP printers without numeric keypad should be as follows:

1. press buttons Set, Menu, Mono Start one by one, followed by up arrow key four times. this should all be done as short a time as possible, around 3 seconds.

2. enter maintenance mode 80 by pressing the up/down arrow key and set key to select numbers 8 and 0

3. press up arrow key several times to get to the Purge item

4. enter 2, 7, 8 and 3 using arrow/set keys to reset the counter

5. press Stop/Exit key to go to root of maintenance mode

6. enter 9,9 to exit maintenance mode

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response

Thanks, Joe

Hello!

Here is the "Unable to Clean" (code 46) solution:

Further purge operations are prohibited, and therefore the printer becomes unuseable.

When an internal Machine Error 46 is generated, the user will see an “Unable to Clean” external message and will be unable to use the printer. The “Unable to Clean” external message can relate to many different internal error codes however.

The user can establish the internal Machine Error Code as follows: pull the mains cable out of the machine (power off), hold down the Menu/Set key, re-insert the mains cable into the machine (power on). The internal Machine Error Code will be displayed.

If there is a Machine Error 46, it is necessary to dismantle the printer, replace the ink absorber box (or possibly break the ink absorber box open and clean its absorbent sponges under a tap), re-assemble the printer and reset the purge counter to zero.

Solution no. 1. (DCP-110C):

The proper reset code sequence to reset DCP printers without numeric keypad should be as follows:
