Question about Bernina Activa 130

1 Answer

The bottom thread will bunch up occasionally, and stop the machine with thread hooked somewhere--probably around the bobbin.

Hmmm, does the thread bunch up under the fabric or in the bobbin?
Check both your tensions and if that doesn't work it could be that your machine is slightly off time and needs to be adjusted.

Why does bobbin thread keep snagging?

increase the needle thread tension up a bit as it is too loose to pull the bobbin thread up properly
keep adjusting until both threads are at the middle of the materials being sewn

Top thread is bunching underneath

bunching underneath is an indication that the top tension is incorrect
switching projects and materials also that attention has to be given to tension adjustment both bottom and top
the catching sometimes indicates that a tension is too tight and is pulling the needle out of line

When I start to sew, the thread gets bunched up around the hook race unit

adjust the upper thread tension as this indicates the thread is not pulling the bottom thread up tight

The bobbin will not wind properly - it bunches at the bottom and will not "thread" from top to bottom for proper tension

Mine did same thing, was told to wrap twice around the silver know where you normally wrap twice, make sure bobbin is all the way down.dont forget you start threading as if you were going to for top thread go thru first hook then over to silver know, but twice.hope this helps did me

My bobbin keeps bunching up. I've changed the tension to 2, taken the bobbin case out, used a different bobbin....I don't know what to do. My machine is a month old and I've used it, maybe 4...

Put the tension back up to about 5. Rethread the machine entirely, and make sure you have the pressure foot in the up position when you rethread. If your getting bunching on the bottom, it's probably your top thread that's bunching up. After you rethread, put a small piece of fabric under the pressure foot, lower the pressure foot, and turn the handwheel in the forward direction and watch the thread as it comes around the bobbin case. If it goes around smoothly, try it with the foot control. If it hangs up as it goes around the bobbin case, you might have a burr on the black plastic bobbin case. Take it out, check for any burrs, sand them down, and try again.

The bobbin thread keeps bunching up on my 990 machine

It is probably not the bobbin thread that is "bunching", put different color top (maybe red), and bobbin (maybe white), thread in the machine and sew. If the top thread is messing up on the bottom of the cloth you have 3 possible solutions. Here are the solutions in order of probability:
1 - You have not threaded the UPPER thread correctly. Read your book on threading.
2 - Your UPPER thread tension is too low. Try setting it at 5 or so.
3 - Your shuttle is damaged. Get a new one.

Thread is bunching underneath fabric

Needle in correct? Be sure your bobbin is not in upside down and turning the wrong way. Possibly the hook that the bobbicase fits in/on has been hit by a needle and caused a burr that is catching the thread as it comes around. The burr would have to be polished off or hook replaced. The machine could be slightly out of time also.

Bobbin problems

Any time you have looping on the bottom, it is almost always related to the upper tension and not anything in the bobbin area.
A good way to troubleshoot this is to turn the machine off, blow out the upper tension disk assemblies with canned air, (the machine needs to be off because most canned air uses butane as a propellant. Butane + electricity = bad;) replace your needle, and rethread your machine. Once you've threaded it to the point where you're about to put the thread through the needle, "floss" the thread forward and backward to ensure that the thread seats correctly into the tension assemblies.
Set your tension to around 4.5 for most applications, and drop your presser foot. Give the thread a gentle tug to see if the tensions have engaged the thread, then thread the needle.

If doing this does not address the problem, you probably need to have your tensions professionally calibrated. This is also true if the needle is in fact hitting something in the bobbin area. This is usually caused by the machine's timing being out of alignment, which is not something that can be fixed at home.

Good luck,

-R
