Typewriter runs fine but won't imprint on paper - looks like the strike isn't taking place

I don't think it is the wheel - the part that raises up to strike the wheel to allow for the imprint on the paper is not moving. Do you have any other suggestions?

  • jonistusek Aug 25, 2010

The electrical components are working fine, but the part that should raise up to strike the wheel to imprint the letter onto the paper is not moving. The last expert felt it was the wheel itself, but the wheel seems ok (moving, etc.) but the part that should strike the wheel will not move. Could it be a faulty electrical part or connection?

The strike is generated by an electromagnet so it's clearly its fault. Either the electromagnet is faulty (a short in the coil) or it's not commanded because either there's a bad connection or the mainboard has failed.
The only way to know which is to dismantle the machine and testing :start by checking the continuity of the coil, then if power is reaching the coil when you press a key , and finally that the command is leaving ther board. If it doesn't you must find why by checking the amplifying transistor and its command.

Really, you have a typewriter?

You stop typing before you reach the end. If it is the electronic type with a display, you need to set the paper size to the size of paper you are using.

If you are using a computer and word processing program, again, set the paper size.

Hammer won't strike

1.If your unit is not printing check the ribbon cartridge to make sure it has not run out.
2.If the ribbon appears silver or gray install a new cartridge. Also make sure the ribbon is advancing in the cartridge.
3.Next make sure the black lever in the center of the carriage is pressed toward the paper. If not, press the black lever toward the paper to lock the daisywheel into place and reset unit by holding down the "CODE" key, while holding the code key down press the "REST / Q" keyand release both keys.
4. Try typing. If problem still exists contact an Authorized Brother service center. You may do so at 1-800-284-4357 or by visiting our website.

Ribbon does not advance properly to give clear imprint

You are in the over strike ribbon mode. The code and period, comma or slash (I can never remember which) will get you out of the mode.

When typing, the letters are not showing up well unless it is on double strike. have take printwheel out and changed ribbon but still not striking paper well.

The problem may be the ribbon or the media you are typing on. try typing on a mulit part form, if the copies are good then its the ribbon (OLD) or the paper (GLOSSY).

I have a Canon StarWriter 30 that I bought ~1995. I rarely use it, and have kept it in mint condition. I just tried to type something, and found that it's not printing the full characters; it's cutting...

Check that the hammer is striking the letters squarely, that the daisy wheel is firmly located in its holder , Check too that the patten has not moved up in its location. Check that the ribbon can still transfer a deposit across its entire width. (Look back at a used part of the ribbon to see the strike pattern).

The hammer on our typewriter won't strike, it just quit in mid type. Any suggestions? When we push a key, it will not strike the letter for it to print on the paper.

Hi - there a many reasons why this happens. Try these first. Replace the ribbon. This might have become tight (faulty) and make this happen. Next clean the main rod that the carriage goes back and forth on, it sometimes get very sticky. Then place a couple of drips of oil on. This should work wonders? Best John ex OEM trained mechanic

Cant get the typewriter to print

Be sure the the ribbon has not run out or is jammed. You can test this by rotating the colored knob on the top of the ribbon cartridge in the direction of the arrow imprinted the housing.

If not, do you hear the click of the hammer striking the printwheel? If not you may have a defective main board or hammer solenoid.

Keys are striking the paper but no black ink is printing on paper

If tou put in a two part form and it types on the second form the ribbon is either empty of not lifting up. If it isn't lifting up there is a large black gear on the rt. side of the printer, wiggle it back and forth they sometimes jam tooth for tooth.

IBM Wheelwriter 3 not striking ribbon onto page

There is a plastic cap on the print solenoid plunger that is probably broken, they are available but a little tricky to install.

The forms obviously have a glossy surface, a fabric or multi strike ribbon will work. There is a impression control oh the l. side of the keyboard and also a bold feature, try max impression and bold.
