Most barcode scanners work similar to a keyboard or mouse. for instance, connect your scanner. open notepad. and fire away at some barcodes. you will see there numerical translations appear as you scan them. this is because most software handles the code as a number. place your cursor in the right spot and scan the code. hope that helps you.
