Mdl. MS40A. The recoil starter does not grab. The mechanism inside the recoil is plastic and has worn down. I need a new one, but I want to make sure the new one is metal.

If it has ball bearings in the rachet mechanism they may be sticking and need cleaning so they move freely.!

I had the same problem with my 18 inch Ryobi saw. The problem is the tabs that engage the recoil to the flywheel are of poor quality steel and they bend out of position. The end result is when you pull tyhe rope it just jumps and wont start. Eaven the new parts do the same thing. Simple soultion is remove the recoil starter four screws require a torx bit or a flat screwdriver. after your remove the recoil starter using a pair of pliers bend the two tabs upwards untill they are not quite straight up (about a 80 degree angle be carefull not ot brake the tab off) once you have done this remove the center nut that holds the flywheel on. the silver pins that hold the tabs in position need to be punched out but remember how they go back by doing only one at a time and remember how the spring is installed. Turn the flywheel over and using a punch and hammer remove the pins. Put the tabs in a vise to hold them sucerly clean the steel as best you can on the inside of the bend. Fill the bend with brazing rod or coat hanger if you haven't got any brazing rod avilable. You don't have to com;leatly fill the bend but put enough in there to suport the tabas so they can't bend agin. Reassemble the saw and you're done. Mine works great now, better than new. This problem isn't limited to recon saws only, mine is a new saw and I still had the problem. Good luck herbdogs

Pull cord not grabbing


The Dogs inside the Recoil are worn or Dirty is my first idea. But it could also be a loose Recoil also (This happened to me and my Ski Doo XP.

I purchased a new Recoil just to find out that 3 of the bolts were missing. Got new bolts and tightened it up and returned the Recoil. Ski Doo's Recoil Rebuild Kits do not last very long.

Its an easy opperation to undertake if you know how. Take note of where everything goes during the stripping down of the recoil assembly. Use eye protection when trying to recoil the rewind spring, they have a tendency to jump back out at you while coiling them back in. easiest way is to start by putting the hooked end into the plastic housing and work your way inwards coiling it back in. Then place the starter cord roller in on top, adding the one or two black sliders, the washer and the spring clip to hold it all in place.

Starter rope replacement


recoil spring has slipped out of the hole.pull your starter rope out of the wind up mechanism, insert the spring latch on both ends and put back into housing. with a piece of 3/4 square stock or something the will fit mthe hole start to wind the mechanism spring up tight. with apair vishgrips lock it down so it does not move. insert your starter rope anr release the visegrips. the springwii recoil and pull the rope in.cut off excess rope. good luck

How do you get the starter rope to rewind after pulling to start my 25 cc poulin pro trimmer? How do you access the recoil spring?


The starter rope normally rewinds automatically when the recoil unit is functioning properly. If the pull rope has stayed out, disassembly will be required. Here are instructions for that problem. The recoil spring can break and is replaceable, but the nylon hub in the starter recoil unit is usually the problem or the rope has broken and jammed inside.
Remove the tube that holds the flex-drive shaft from the front of the motor cover.Remove the rear engine cover. Remove the throttle cable from the carburetor. Mark and unplug any wires for the on/off switch that go to the ignition coil (underneath front cover) if possible. Now if you have pulled the driveshaft tube out of the way, the clutch drum is up next. Inside it, screwed into the very end of the engine's crankshaft is a Torx #25 screw. Before you loosen it, you will have to lock up the engine. To do so, remove the spark plug. Pull on the starter until the piston is down, then insert a length of clean, soft rope into the engine. The engine will come up and compress the rope, thus locking it in place to allow clutch drum and clutch removal. Loosen the T-25 (Star bit or Torx head) screw inside the drum.. You may be able to remove it with a long thin-blade screwdriver also.It probably won't come completely out...it is made this way. Next, remove the clutch. It is screwed onto a small threaded section of the crankshaft Removal is counterclockwise.. It will be pretty tight. To help, apply peneterating oil. Whack the ears of the clutch near the center with a hammer and a dull flat-blade chisel or a small piece of wood unless there are bolts. then use a wrench. It will turn counterclockwise for removal and there will probably be a removal direction arrow on it's face. After getting that off, remove the Torx screws holding the cover to the engine. The starter unit should be mounted inside as it mates with the top of the flywheel to start the motor. Remember to preload tension (5-7 turns) on the starter unit. Make sure the handle is installed. Jam the unit with a screwdriver or vise grips so you can insert and tie off the new rope. Then remove jam device and let recoil pull your new rope into place while holding the handle. Reassemble and you are done. Disassembly requires Torx head drivers and a good flat-blade screwdriver. Here are more details for servicing the starter/recoil unit....With the starter/recoil unit OFF the machine, with no rope in it, and no tension on it.....grasp the little nylon hub and turn it (clockwise is I recall) round and round 6-7 times until you feel the recoil spring get nice and tight...DO NOT LET GO OF IT!...hold it in place and then JAM the starter/recoil unit in place (still tight) inside it's housing by either clamping it with a tool like vise grips or by sticking a screwdriver thru it and thru the vents in the cover. If you have ANOTHER person to help you...one of you hold it in place....and make sure it is lined up to where you can NOW insert the new lenth of pull rope. Always use new rope....Feed the end thru the hole in the recoil unit and tie it off, by wrapping it around itself outside the nylon hub and then screw the little self-tapping set screw back in holding the rope down. OK...then feed the opposite end into the hole in the front engine cover and attatch the T pull handle....Now mind you, you are still jammming or holding the recoil in place against the spring!...Now, unclamp it or unjam it and slowly let the recoil pull the NEW rope you just installed back onto the pulley. Make sure it is fastened well on top of the pulley around the nylon hub and also fastened well onto the T pull handle. That is it. Then reconnect your wires, put your throttle cable back thru the engine cover and reinstall the Torx screws in the cover...and you are doneervicing the recoil unitl

WHEN YOU PULL THE PULLEY CORD IT SLIPS AND WONT START THE WHIPPER SNIPPER. IT DOESN'T GRAB ITS SLIPPING WHEN YOU GO TO PULL IT TO START. PLEASE HELP ME THAT WOULD


The piece on the recoil that engages with the fingers on the flywheel is worn. You have to get another spool that goes in to the recoil it is usually plastic and it wears.

When i tried to pull the starter string it wont come out.why?


The starter/recoil design for these machines isn't the best. Sometimes the pulley the rope is in binds up...sometimes the rope will catch a notch in the pulley (the rope pulley is plastic)..and sometimes the crankshaft bearings in the engine become loose and worn and the alignment for all the parts on the shaft is skewed. This includes the flywheel and the clutch and the flexible drive shaft and the starter recoil unit. You will have to disassemble to get down to the heart of the problem.

I have a McCollough MS40A chainsaw. It took it


The chain brake must be released before starting this exercise. At this point, you will have to operate the release with a large screwdriver since the cover must be in place normally to operate the brake. Good luck!

Starter rope broke how do i replace it. toro super recycler mower. Removed the plastic engine cover and the recoil mechanism seems to be rivited down and I cant get in there to replace the rope. Please...


You have to remove the whole engine air shroud over the flywheel to gain access to the recoil and rope mechanism. If you need specific help on your exact model engine I need all of engine model type numbers 5 to 6 char then 4 char then 2 char i.e XXXXXX-YYYY-ZZ for B & S Honda numbers are by the engine oil port on the base of the crank case.
